Moving forward with Composr

ocPortal has been relaunched as Composr CMS. ocPortal 9 is superseded by Composr 10.

Beta-countdown: May 16th We've had a number of comments since our new-year site relaunch that we have lost the community atmosphere we once had. This is unfortunate, as this really wasn't our intention, and we haven't taken anything away - instead, we reorganised things to give emphasis more to the product and documentation aspects of our website than the community aspects, so that those users who just wanted to use the system (in particular, our corporate users) could get on with it without being distracted.

As a result of the feedback, we have decided that rather than trying to please two sets of users with very different wishes, we should instead provide a separate website for each of them. Therefore, within a few weeks we will be relaunching ourselves with two distinct websites:

The difference between these websites will be more than just focus, however. We have decided to truly run ocProducts with two separate divisions, each with their own version of ocPortal:
  • the ocProducts website will provide an enterprise version of ocPortal, which will be available as a part of an overall bespoke professional service rather than for direct download
  • the ocPortal website will continue to distribute ocPortal as a product with a system of support similar to what we already provide

The enterprise version of ocPortal will include a number of new features:
  • Full support for our new XML version of Comcode
  • Full support for database replication
  • Full support for load sharing
  • Welcome E-mails, a new feature whereby members may be sent out e-mails at preset periods after they join
In addition, a number of ocPortal features that were only really useful to enterprise users will from version 3.0 onwards, only be available in it:
  • LDAP support
  • SSL support
  • Support tickets
  • The Collaboration zone
We will also be offering customised deployment of ocPortal features that have not been available in the main ocPortal since version 2.1:
  • support for databases other than mySQL
  • running ocPortal websites that provide content in multiple languages

The features we are removing from the main ocPortal were very carefully chosen so as to not cause significant disruption to users who would not wish to transfer to the enterprise version. We honestly believe the removal of these advanced features that frankly no non-corporate website has really used much, will actually help streamline the system. If, however, any existing registered ocPortal user wishes to have this functionality in ocPortal 3.0, we will provide it for no extra cost if a support ticket is made with us.
