Automated fix message

Golab said

Hi Bob,

Yeah were on the same page :) .
The problem is that if I go and do that, I get the following error.
"
This member is in a usergroup which is protected from passwords resets, for a higher level of security. "

So I cannot reset the password. LOL.
And I cannot get into the users to be able to even change my status to a lower group.

This issue has been filed on the tracker as issue #583, with a fix.

It still shows there is a bug or something with profiles, well at least for me since the new version came out.

When I went into the database I was actually going to change my group to a lower one and then do my password reset .LOL I then noticed the word facebook and out of the 500 users I only had it. So it worked out okay that way.  Thanks for trying though.
And yes I will await someone to explain to me which posts show up ect as I have no idea how to even test it if its actually working .LOL

To answer this…

If the non-bundled activities addon is installed, you can turn on Facebook syndication for your content from your activities tab on your member profile. This is a member-level thing, not to do with the administration of the site. It doesn't require you to be logged in using Facebook to use it, you just enable (or disable) the authorisation for the site. There is no option about what gets syndicated – everything Guests could see is.

For staff-level syndication, this is for news and calendar events only, and there's an option on the add form for whether syndication should happen for what you are adding. If you want other stuff to syndicate, think of it like this – "I have just done something I want to announce, so it deserves a news announcement on my site too" and therefore with that kind of thinking you can syndicate anything ;).

Investigation of Chipster's problem is on hold while I wait for the makers of Window-Eyes to get back to me. Definitely not a fan at the moment ;).

Hi,

I have a user reporting a problem between Window-Eyes and our Open Source software's integration with Facebook.

I want to help workaround this. It won't be a bug in our software, it'll be something between how Facebook logins work and how Window-Eyes works. To workaround it I need to run tests. However, the demo is completely unusable for me. After roughly 10 minutes of active use it seems the will-soon-expire message is read out by Window-eyes every few seconds. This gives me about 10 minutes to debug a complex problem, before I get driven crazy by this 10-second-long save-your-work message being read out every few seconds. I then need to do a complete reboot. I guess the Window-eyes timer starts when the computer starts up, and keeps going whether Window-eyes is open or not. So if the computer takes 10 minutes to fully start, and the warning starts 10 minutes before the 30 minutes ends, that explains the tiny 10 minute time window that I have.

All in all, it's driving me round the bend. As I am just trying to help a user using some free software, paying for a license, or for a trial, is untenable. So right now I am going to have to quit helping them because it's extremely time consuming to support your software, and very stressful. I couldn't find any information on your site about a free development license, but you really need to have one of these. It's the only way Open Source programmers who aren't working directly on accessibility-related projects are going to be able to do testing (well, unless we torrent the software or find some kind of crack, but I'm definitely not going to do that).

I also found I could not type this message (in Mozilla Thunderbird) without closing Window-Eyes, because it seemed to defocus the typing area each time I pressed a key.

And I also found Window-Eyes using very high CPU usage. I think I resolved that by turning off the read-outs for keypresses – but between working in a web browser, and an IDE, and running a web server on my machine, having 40% CPU each time I press a key was not workable .

So please understand why this is stressing me out. High costs for supporting something that is a loss maker to us, a 30 minute trial requiring complete reboots that only effectively lasts 10 minutes, high CPU usage bogging down my machine, and broken e-mail – all on top of actually having a computerised voice shouting at me while I try and frantically make it all work.

Chris

Hi Chris,
I'm sorry about the trouble you've had with the WE demo, and yes it is a pain in the rearend.

I also appreciaite the work that you've done in trying to resolve the issue.  However, I know you're a very busy man, and I will not be upset if you just drop it all together.  The addin seems to work for the majority of the community and there's no need in you spending your limited time on an issue that's only effecting what appears to be one user.

Actually they've gone up in my estimation greatly as they responded to tell me they're going to supply a free evaluation license (which is normally paid). I'll work with them on reporting the little issues I find now :).

I guess maybe I didn't explain my problem very well.  I've not logged in since installing the Facebook addin.  Once the addin is installed it defaults to wanting you to log in using your facebook username and password.  Since I had read the thread explaining the issues with that I had not, on purpose, logged in yet.  After installing the addin it gives you the option to log in using either your Facebook log in or you site's normal login.  However, i'm not able to select the option to log in using my sites regular log in because my screen reader cannot tell that there's a choice.  I can see where it says, "Log in using your Facebook account," and I can see, "Log in using your Chip & Tracy's place username and password," but they don't appear as links or options to my screen reader.

I couldn't reproduce a problem here. However, it might be a matter of misunderstanding. These are both headings. So the actual login options are beneath the headings. I found they worked normally with Window-Eyes, using the various navigation modes available.

This said, I did find one ocPortal bug to do with overlays, and I found a bug in Window-Eyes I could workaround relating to labels for checkbox form fields (it wasn't reading the labels out). These will both be resolved in the next patch release.

I also have a list of feedback I will be sending to the Windows-Eyes guys. Particularly they don't seem to support ARIA well yet, which is a real shame as we have good support for this inside ocPortal. It is useful for identifying overlays, tooltips, independent areas of the pages, etc. In particular I found it really annoying that whenever I opened an overlay it just decided to read the whole page out again, with the overlay last. Even without ARIA, theoretically Window-Eyes could be smart and tell what part was added to the page – but we actually provide ARIA mark-up to tell the browser that the overlay is a new 'dialog', so it should know.

Chris, you're absolutely awesome.  I know no other in your position that would go so far and I personally want to thank you.   I've known for some time there were short comings in Window EYES, but at $895.00 to $1095.00  switching to JAWS is just not in my immediate future.  I hope that GW Micro will take your advice and make the changes you suggested.  That would be great.  I've been a GW Micro customer since 1993 and have found that they do try very hard to stay on top of things, but we'll see how your suggestions play out.  As far as the Face book addin goes, I'll try it again, but when I first started this thread I could see that each log in was under a heading, but there was no link or other control to select it.  Maybe I'm missing something.

One last thing, I was just looking at the 8.1 tracker page.  If I downloaded a new distribution would the fixes be in it?

No, but a new patch release will be soon.

Regarding the FB problem, you might want to take it up direct with GW Micro and see what they say. Make sure you know the exact version you're on and any appropriate settings, and give them a URL to test on. Feel free to CC me in on any e-mails.

Ok, I download and install the addin on a test domian that I have, and still I can see the headings with Window EYES, but it see no links or buttons or way to choose which log in to use.  I had my dauther sitting beside me when I did try, and she could see the the "Log in with your chipmccainsfullcircle.com account" or whatever the correct verbage is, and she could also see that the option to log in using a facebook account was a button, but could not select it while Window EYES was active.  Once i unloaded Windoweyes she was able to choose either option.  I know this sounds a little strange, but you say you weren't able to recreate the issue.  Did you try using just Window EYES, maybe with your eyes closed or by Window EYES navigation only, without the advantage or being able to see the screen to make your selection?  Just curious here.

Also, The last time I tried to install the addin, unders "setup / configuration / features/ facebook"  there were edit boxes to enter the app id, app secret, and user id, but no edit box to enter the app api key.

I guess I'm just destin not to be able to use this addin.  It makes it very helpful though.  Being able to post my news and calendar dates to my website and have it auto publish to facebook was great.

I'll take another look. Could you describe exactly how you navigate to form fields usually? I noticed there were a few ways in Window-Eyes, e.g.:
  • tab key
  • down arrow key, in browse mode
  • telling Window-Eyes to go to next-form/next-field

And once you get to a form field, do you start typing right away, or do you exit browse mode, or do you press enter to activate the field?

What you're doing is probably normal, but I need to make sure my testing method matches it, i.e. I test the software in the normal way.

While in browse mode the up and down arrows advance one line at a time, while "ctrl-r" reads to end.  "c" will advance through the controls, edit boxes, radio and checks etc, of course shift-c goes in reverse. "h" cycles through the headers and shift-h goes in reverse The tab key advances through links and controls.  Once on an edit box, check or radio control, or combo/list,  pressing enter turns browse mode off so you can type while in and edit box, and checks the radio or check box, or allows you to up and down arrow through a list.  If the list box uses javascript pressing "alt-downarrow" disables the javascript so you can up and down arrow through the list without selecting it.  Once you made your selection pressing enter or tab activates the selection chosen in the list.  The numeric keyboard, with numlock off, acts as a virtual mouse.  1-9 are navigation keys, while / is a left click, * is a right click.  "ctrl-shift-a" toggles browse mode on and off.

I still couldn't reproduce this. I tried on both IE and Firefox, using various navigation techniques. I checked I was using the same version of Window-Eyes, and I tried it on your own test site. If I use 'C' I get to "Edit box username" quite easily, and I can activate it and type into it.

However

I did find the Facebook button would not activate. This is because it is defined as a link, but a link without an href meaning it would just show up as text. Also I could not force the mouse pointer to it either.

I found that setting some different Facebook parameters for the login button made it work.

It is possible that the link tag with no href used for the Facebook button is confusing your copy of Window-Eyes somehow. So it might be that this fixes it. I will also try changing LOGIN_SCREEN.tpl to put the Facebook button last, which might also stop it interfering with ocPortal's.

So the attached themes/default/templates_custom/LOGIN_SCREEN.tpl uses different Facebook parameters, and reverses the login box order.

The terminology has changed with Facebook. I believe we now use their current terminology, when previously it was confused. The app ID and API key are the same thing.
