Workflows look really promising for sites with multiple/different people responsible for various aspects of the site's content.

sort options - would be nice. v8 propagates it IIRC so if you put it in your menu link it sticks.
So would you just create a custom sort field for the galleries and then specify that field in menu link with an ascending/descending attribute?

No probably just append ":sort=compound_rating DESC" to the menu's page link. (I haven't checked the parameter naming but I think that's right). It's already managed by URL, so this just specifies it in the initial link.
Ideally yes we want to have options for all the default sort orders and "per screen" amounts. It's on the tracker somewhere.
There is an issue that the number of config options are getting huge, so adding another 20 is undesirable for performance reasons, so part of this is that the way config options are loaded up may need redesigning.

Got it. It is a bug, but something else in my environment was triggering a full language file load.

I'll fix that bug (trivial) but to reproduce my environment make data_custom/permissioncheckslog.php writable.

The problem turned out to be that there was no data_custom/permissioncheckslog.php. I created the file and it works and you are quite right - very impressive.

So what does the compound rating sort refer to?

As to the rest, I am sure these things will be addressed over time. I think it's quite impressive with what you have already done with v8 and can only imagine the potential goodness of a v9 or v10.

'compound_rating' essentially just means 'rating'. I could explain why the word compound is there but there wouldn't be much point

That sounds like it will use just the rating. What is needed is a sort field that would set to n+1 when the entry is added. If the entry with sort #72 is changed to 15, it would then reshuffle all the subsequent entries.

I thought I remembered seeing workflows in both galleries and catalogs, but upon  rechecking, I find them available for just galleries. It would be good to have them for catalogs, blogs/news and downloads I would think.

Chris-

Are the new commits in github being incorporated into v8? Are you going to fork the code in github for new non-v8 development?

It will be in v8. There is a certain amount of (delayed) "last minute juggling" going on.

Sounds like v8 is getting close.  :)

I don't know which is the more prevalent emotion coursing through my brain at the moment - anticipation or dread!

The former because I want to see ocP storm ahead of any perceived competition, the latter because I simply know I will ultimately screw up my site when I adopt it.

Oh, well …

 :(

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

I understand that emotion.

I'm anxious but leery even with the few mods I've made. For those like yourself who have expertly crafted an unique site, I suspect there will be a fair amount of work involved but with an even greater amount of reward. Some of the new features like improved metadata handling and (and new title support in some places) makes this almost a no-brainer as it will impact SEO for a site to some degree.

With such a big change you should practice your screw ups test the changes out on your clone site.

Hmmmm,you said back in August:

I am certain to attempt to use it in the (very) near future, especially when I take a stab at producing 'themes' and ' templates'.
I guess I misunderstood what you meant by near future     .

At my age, 'future' is a sort of nebulous thing.

When I wake up each morning and see the sun streaming through the windows I am suitably thankful. And then I do my daily exercises, you know, wiggling the toes 'n' such, and then decide to haul myself off to the coffee shop for my daily fix.

Now, where was I before I started rambling? Oh, yes, cloning my site. I thank ye for the link (I can get to the coffee shop quicker), and this time I WILL go through with it.

thanks

Update: (11 March 2012)
Site cloned.
Now to destroy it with as many 'updates' and 'upgrades' that are thrown this way.
Bring it on!

I've always had a clone site set up for whatever software I was using but temps's post knocked two or three steps off of it. I've got that post bookmarked as I now always start with a clean clone site for each upgrade.
