You can ask only 1 question per poll.

Unfortunately, that makes the polls not particularly interesting because there is no opportunity to weigh options without a long and complicated list of answers. There is no opportunity to present inter-dependencies that might cause a person to change his position given the new information. I opened this thread for discussion of this topic. I guess that fact that I have basically been talking to myself for the most part reflects the level of interest, unfortunately. But I will enjoy watching those who plan to use the purchase-to-download feature without multi-categorization – maintaining entries in duplicate and making sure they remain in sync. I'm retired and I still value my time over the $20 to $30 dollars that sponsoring 2 or 3 credits would cost, and this while running a not-for-profit site. I guess if you value your time at 5-7 bucks an hour or so, the tedium of maintaining duplicate entries really isn't so bad. Bob |

Unfortunately you can't equate time to money so easily. If I did, there is no way in hell I would have spent the amount of time I have on my site or here, it would have been far "cheaper" for me to hire someone to do it. Its a different matter when the time is related to income generation, like the purchase-to-download scenario, and the old adage of "you have to spend money to make money" is still very valid.

Rather than providing the 51 credits of seed sponsorship, I will instead match other's sponsorships credit-for-credit up to a maximum of 51 total credits (which is half the total cost). You sponsor 6 credits, I sponsor 6 credits. You sponsor 3 credits, I sponsor 3 credits. You sponsor 1 credit, I sponsor 1 credit. This effectively doubles the value of your sponsorship. But, to be clear, the onus is on others to get this project in motion in terms of funding. I consider this a reasonable way to honor my original commitment of sponsoring 51 credits while encouraging participation from others. I think this will make it easier for me to feel engaged with this project, still cheerleading when I get the opportunity while driving home the point that this is about sponsorships from the whole community, not just a few members. I hope others receive this as a positive sign and that we can soon have this very important feature fully sponsored. It will be an interesting test case. Bob |

I hope others will consider participating in this project by adding their sponsorship. Bob |

Bob, I completely agree with your reasoning and point of view here. You have consistently demonstrated that you put your money where your mouth is. You words and generosity are true! I've added a few drops in this bucket to kick start a valuable project that will enhance not only the catalogues, galleries and download features, but would greatly simplify the ecommerce feature as well. I will add more when budget permits and encourage those who would benefit from these to add their sponsorship, even if it is just one credit. Jean |

Jean- Thanks again for your generosity, not only for this project but the others you have sponsored and all the other things you do for the community. I'd just like to remind people that that one credit sponsorship turns into two credits as soon as I see it and make my match. Bob |

While I can certainly see the value of the feature, I really don't know if I would ever need it.

I'm not a mindreader so I will not conclude that no vote means no interest (it could just as easily mean you unblinded the poll prior to voting and are now prevented from voting). Please vote if you can or leave a message if you can;t vote and don't mind sharing your opinion publicly. Bob |

That was not a choice I was given in the poll. Answering "Yes, I am interested and want to help co-sponsor" indicates, to my mind, that I am reaching into my wallet for my plastic friend!
Take my advice. I'm not using it!

That is one of the problems with using a single poll to ask a multi-faceted question. Each additional one adds more complexity to the choices and raises the number of choices exponentially to be able to get a more precise data set. Most polls, if not worded carefully, will make it difficult for some to make an appropriate response. Even using the standard fallback option "other and leave a commit" could create missed data opportunity because there is no anonymity for that person.

Thanks for the sponsorship, Ollie (and Fletch for his generosity allowing this sponsorship). I've just matched your 6 credits so we are now up to 18 credits. We just need to keep building on this momentum and we will have a great new feature in ocPortal – useful to many site owners and their visitors. Bob |

Yeah, that's my fault. I was a bit lukewarm to the poll idea when sholzy mentioned it. By the time I decided that it was a good idea, it was late but I wanted to get the poll up before the next morning so I just did it freehand without notes. The results are that I really missed a category. I mentioned above that the "want" was too strong a word and really a phrase like "would be interested" or "would consider sponsoring" would have been better. I look forward to sponsorship if and when you can wing it but you are always generous with the community and put Ollie's contribution in play. Thanks for that. Bob

I was simply amplifying my position, which you know I've done with you in the past. Let's all get focussed on the end product, and chip in where we can. I think that was always your intention.
Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Yes, Fletch, that has always been my intention and goal. One reason I came to agree that sholzy's idea for a poll was good is that it provides greater insight into the utility of a feature to the community. I can only speak for myself but, personally, I find it much easier to commit to sponsoring a project when I see that it is something that will be useful to many members in the community (as in the CSS updates). I will always look after my own interests first, but seeing that others will benefit (and I am confident that many will with this project) elevates my interest in getting it done. So, in short, keep the votes rolling in whatever your position – these votes provide needed input to me and to the community at-large. Bob |

Of course, if you are interested and are in a position to co-sponsor some portion of this feature, please remember that I am matching sponsorships credit-for-credit up to a total of one-half the cost of this feature. We are currently at 18 credits out of the 102 needed to complete the sponsorship for this feature. I know that is a long way to go, but I also know that there are a number of members who are willing to co-sponsor as their finances allow. And since I am matching sponsorships credit-for-credit, your sponsorships effectively double in value. If you think that this feature will help you (and it will if you plan on using the purchase to download feature – 0000263: Purchase to Download - attach downloadable files that must be purchased before downloading - ocPortal feature tracker), then please consider co-sponsoring this feature. If you are looking for a way to give back to the community, your co-sponsorship of this feature (or others) is a great way to demonstrate community participation. Please consider co-sponsoring this feature: 0000063: Multi-categorisation - ocPortal feature tracker Bob |

Please remember that I am matching all sponsorships up to one-half the cost. You sponsor, I match. That simple. This feature not only provides new tools for categorization, it makes the "Purchase to download feature (0000263: Purchase to Download - attach downloadable files that must be purchased before downloading - ocPortal feature tracker) easier to use because you will not need to create and maintain duplicate entries for use in the special category. Beyond that, I would really like to see this feature join the already-coded grid layout and dynamic filtering features in v9 as part of what I call the "Presentation Pack"; all three of these features expand your ability to present information and better tools for your visitors to find what they are looking for. So, if you are interested in sponsoring this feature, now is the time to act. Please join me in getting this valuable new feature implemented in time for inclusion in v9. You can sponsor at 0000063: Multi-categorisation - ocPortal feature tracker Bob |
