How our inbuilt forum competes with standalone forums

Posted 15 August 2011, 11:57 AM

Years ago we decided it was better to write our own forum ('OCF') on top of the ocPortal framework, than to go for deeper, but imperfect, integrations with third-party forums. Amazingly the bulk of OCF was written over just a few weeks and we were able to learn quite a few lessons from mistakes other forum software had, and made a number of innovations.

Here are some features we have in OCF that are mostly unique across forum…

Having integrated forums that were comparable to SMF and PHPBB were one of the reasons that I chose OCP. Sure, there are other forum software that does have 'a certain feature' but OCP has the tightest integration without depending on a software 'bridge', messing up things.

Now, if we could just get a way to put spacers for advertisements in the forums … :)

I put an Ad after the 3rd post of every forum page.

How? In OCF_TOPIC_POST.tpl, I changed:

Code

<tr>
   <td colspan="2">&nbsp;</td>
</tr>
to:

Code

<tr>
   {$INIT,pc,1}
   {+START,IF,{$EQ,{$GET,pc},3}}
      <td colspan="2"><center>
      //
      // Put AD code here
      //
      </center></td>
   {+END}
   {+START,IF,{$NEQ,{$GET,pc},3}}
      <td colspan="2">&nbsp;</td>
   {+END}
   {$INC,pc}
</tr>

Reading through this reminds me of one of the many reasons I chose ocPortal. While the forums are "different" to most other offerings, their integration and some unique features make using ocPortal a delight.

As this was written a looong time ago in I/net terms :-) I'll be interested to see any further improvements to what looks like a VERY good system.
Key point:  It looks sensible, not just bells&whistles.

I hope the rest of the program is like this aspect.
More about the program elsewhere..  :offtopic:
