Hi every one,
I've just installed V8.01 on a new website I'm setting up.  So far so good and the work the staff has done to make ocp accessible is truly awesome.  I especially love the accessibility_hidden parm used in the surround tag.  Being able to convey information to users of screen readers to make it easier to navigate while keeping it hidden, for a cleaner layout, from sighted users has already paid off in spades.

One thing I liked about earlier versions over V8 though the new way of handling inserting dynamic blocks in the editor.  It now opens in a frame instead of a popup window, which is probably great for sighted users, but not so much for users of screen readers.  It is almost agravating now.  Having it pop up in a new window allowed a screen reader user easier access to it while now with it being in a frame on the same window, screen readers have to turn browse mode off and on each time a new selection is made.  Sometimes as much as three or four times, depending on how fast the frame loads.  Even at that, sometimes it inserts the block tag info and sometimes it doesn't.

Any other screen reader users finding this to be true?

Hi,

I suspected this might be a problem, which is why we have traditionally avoided this kind of thing. Popup blockers have made it necessary now, so we decided to go all the way with it.

However, theoretically you can replace overlays with popups. Try putting this into OcCLE:

Code

:set_value('no_faux_popups','1');

I haven't tested it since development, but theoretically it should work. The overlays were implemented as a plug-in replacement for desktop window handling, and this should tell it to revert to the simpler behaviour.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Forgot to say, the template cache needs emptying after that command.
