IPB Intergration

I've noticed some ipb_* .php files in the /admincenter/pages/ folder…

I was wondering how to enable these features?

Just add the links to them onto the admin menu.

I suppose now would be a good enough time as any to release my hacks.

DISCLAIMER: 'Hacks' in the forum sense are unofficial code modifications designed to change your own installation of a forum product. They are nothing to do with computer crime.

These hacks aren't supported, and might not even work… they are based on me going through my own massively modified IPB1.2 forum code after they were all implemented, trying to filter and document my changes.

They are also way out of date as far as ocPortal is concerned, which is why I haven't released them officially. I couldn't rationalise the time, as ocPortal is in no way an IPB based portal for quite some time (IPB isn't supported more than any other supported forum, it just happens I have developed hacks for this forum product in the past).

You need the historic hack.

Another note. If you don't have access to mySQL directly, or via phpmyadmin (or whatever), then you will need to create a temporary script like follows in order to set up a new table (as the historic script requires).

Code

<?php

require_once("funcs.php");

$query=<<<END
--> QUERY GOES HERE <--
END;
simple_query($query,get_db_forums());
echo "Performed $query";

?>

And then run the URL of the script.

IPB mods

ocPortal supports Invision Power Board very well, and we have developed advanced skin and source modifications to the board. Many of the features relate to the ability to use one board for multiple differently themed sites, each with their own very different board view.

These hacks are not necessary to install, and setting them up is not easy. If you would like us to install them (or some of them) for you, contact us and we can arrange a fee.

Hacks include
  • Skin based emoticons and ranks
  • Domain-based forum hiding
  • Transparent forum to forum redirection
  • ocPortal-config integration
  • Per-domain config
  • Per-domain skin defaults
  • Community emoticons hack (they come under a separate header)
  • Global announcements
  • Spoiler tags
  • Image thumbnailing
  • ocPortal-Theme/site-integration (including banner and flagrant text embedding)
  • Reported post topics instead of e-mails
  • PM logging
  • Post delete/edit history
  • Blind polls (votes only seen when the poll is closed)
  • Accurate memory of what posts have and haven't been viewed

Think of this stuff as an unofficial toy or intrigue. It may well work great, it may confuse you, or it may annoy and frustrate you when it doesn't work. We will provide no official support for them, unless performed at our hourly service rate. I'll try and answer questions, if I have the time.

We disclaim any responsibility for any effects of any kind that may or may not happen due to the result of anything relating to the 'hacks' provided. Use them at your own risk.

How do you linke it? I am not really good with PHP and cannot figure out the format of the link. I do know how to edit the menu, I just need an example of one link to the IBP_???.php to follow.

Thanks,

John

Just add a section, say under this one…

Code

-Hosted Sites
 Add Hosted Site = index.php?page=editsites&type=ad
 Manage Hosted Sites = index.php?page=editsites&type=edit

like…

Code

-Hosted Sites
 Add Hosted Site = index.php?page=editsites&type=ad
 Manage Hosted Sites = index.php?page=editsites&type=edit
-Invision addon
 Growth stats = index.php?page=ipb_membergrowth
 Recalculate post counts = index.php?page=ipb_postcounts
 Post Length stats = index.php?page=ipb_postlength

Please don't expect these features to make you fall of your chair, they're just some things I unofficially threw in because I found them helpful personally.

Hmm, invision board is refusing to accept my indentation in what I just posted. All the lines that don't start "-" should have a single space of indentation, just like the sections are in the menu editor.

Non-joined user

Thanks Chris,

I think my problem was I was not indenting either when I tried it. It seems to work now and no reference to needing the "hack" is displayed.

Ok I got everything working except snoop. It only shows My PM's . There is no place to select a user.

This is a REALLY nice portal. I am going to register this for sure!

Excellent :). Ok, the snoop thing was really meant to be done via a specific hack… basically adding a link in a users profile, that linked through to the snoop page for them.

I think maybe 'snoop' wasn't the best word for me to choose… in the hack I believe I wrote about the issues surrounding looking at PMs. So I just want to make people aware that if you do look at peoples PMs, that you should make your users aware of your policy with regard to this

If for example you wanted to look at PMs for user '34', if you didn't have the link hack installed, you'd need to go to…
http://mybaseurl/admincenter/?page=ipb_snoop&member=34

I think I probably included some brief details to applying the hack to an ipb installation in the hacks.zip file in this thread.

Thanks Chris,

Is the hack you are refering to PMLogging.txt ?

I do understand the privacy issues. I just figured that if someone took the time to include it, that their might be some reason that I would need it. I cannot think of what that reason might be at the moment, but I guess that is because I am new to running a board.

The "privacy issue" is this (as I understand it).

Every Private Message sent by registered members on your IPB forum will be "saved" and show up in the snoop link/menu/whatever.

Basicly, this means you can read every single PM sent "Behind the lines", in private..

Some people could abuse this system by reading every PM when it is not needed, clearly violating the member's privacy.

;)

Yes and no :). I believe I actually did two things in that hack…

1) Makes it so PMs are never deleted from the system, merely hidden when they're deleted (so you can always do an investigation into troublesome behaviour without fearing that )

2) Adds a link into each members profile that links through to that users 'snoop' page in the ocPortal admin center.

If you're just starting up a board, I wouldn't worry about the IPB hacks. We don't use them here for example, and they aren't very easy to set up.

The snoop hack was originally written because on a community we run, we had a situation where extremely serious PMs were being sent, so serious that we absolutely had to have a robust way of investigating them. This is an unusual situation, that will happen (we hope) in very few communities.

Yep, That would be the issue.

Just about every tool can be exploited in some manor to provide a use (abuse) that was not intended.
