New theme created

This has been updated! Please refer to View topic: Classic Legends theme - ocPortal

Greetings,

It's been awhile since I've been able to work online or with ocportal. Having to rely on a free web host that was sadly incompatible with ocportal (not enough web space) didn't help matters any.

Happily though all that is behind me. As a way to celebrate putting my site back on ocPortal and our paid for server again, I have made a new theme. I made this theme for my site, however I am willing to share it with you all as a way to give back to this awesome community.

I proudly present my theme: Classic Legends!

Yeah I know, the name isn't all that catchy, but eh… I suck at theme naming.

Please note:

1.) I in no way consider myself an artist. I simply hacked away at it, starting with a base that I created by using the theme wizard. I know, cheating, but eh…

2.) I consider this a 0.5 release. Why a 0.5? Well while I believe I have everything themed right, there is a high chance that I missed something.. some odd font that isn't colored right or whatever.. stuff like that. Also I haven't yet created any button images to go with this theme so as of right now it is using original ocportal button images. I do plan to make button images later. Furthermore, there may be issues that I have missed with the theme, and I can only hope that the theme is packaged right so that it will install and work right for you (I used the theme export function).

3.) I am licensing this as GPL v2. You can look up the license online. Basically, you can do whatever with this theme (distribute, modify, etc) just as long as you give credit back where credit is due.

4.) I am using ocPortal 4.2.3 so I can only attest to it working for that version. I noticed that my older themes I made for 4.1 do not work as well for 4.2 so I do not know if this will be the case for a 4.2 theme on 4.3. Also while I tested this for every browser I can find on linux, since I use linux I was not able to test on IE. Sorry if things don't display right for you if you use IE.

Tools Used:
GIMP
Opera 10.20
Opera Dragonfly Developer Tool (Opera's version of Firebug).

Can't distribute?
Ok.. so I want to distrube this theme, yet I can only add image attachments? How may I distribute this theme? Or does ocportal not want user made themes?

EDIT
Ok I added the theme to the Themes downloads page, but it isn't showing up yet. I assume it needs to be validated first.

Hi,

I just posted that for you using SU, and it worked okay. Was it the same tar you tried to post before, or maybe a different file extension? What error did you get?

I have validated your download, thanks for submitting it!

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Greetings,

Chris: When I tried to upload it earlier, it simply wouldn't upload. It never gave an error message, however I saw in the attachment notes where it said what extensions were allowed, it listed only image format extensions, so I guessed that was why it didn't work.

Yes, that is the file I tried to attach. Thanks for getting it done for me. It is a .tar because that is what the theme exporter exported it as, hopefully that is fine.

Eric: Thanks!

ALL: Please let me know of any issues. It is still very much beta and when everything is done and fully checked out (including images for buttons and the like made) I do plan on releasing a 1.0 release. If there are some major issues that need fixing before then I will fix and make immediate point releases. I basically just wanted to give back. I produced some themes for the older version of ocPortal that I notice don't work the same anymore and figure that instead of trying to fix them it would be better to make a theme 'the right way' from scratch.

Greetings!

I am pleased to announce the completion and release of the Classic Legends theme, version 1.0!

Now please note that I completed this theme using 5.1 beta, however it should work fine in the 5.0 series of ocPortal. I doubt that it will work without any edits in older versions.

With this theme I have made use of css buttons instead of image buttions throughout the site, except in topic view (when you are reading a post) where I had to make some image buttons. I believe I have made enough image buttons for the theme, but if you find some lacking please let me know.

I haven't yet stumbled upon any issues with this theme, but if you find any again, please let me know.

I also uploaded the theme (though I don't see it in the 5.0 uploads yet). I updated the original upload before I noticed that it was in the 4.3 category. Opps….

Anways, here's some screenshots…

Here's the buttons I made. These are only the small buttons because that is all I made. One file is a gimp format (which is what I use being a linux user), the other is saved in a photoshop psd format. Not entirely sure if it will open in all versions of photoshop.

With the buttons, it is one file, but each button is on it's on layer. The very first layer is the background image, which is visible for all the buttons. Then you have the icon layer and the text layer for each button. Simply make the ones visible that you want and the rest leave or make invisible and you can save the button as a png or whatever for the button. This way you can make whatever changes you want to the button without having to change the entire button.

Busy, busy, busy!

Makes even ME consider having a tilt at lodging a 'theme' in the uploads section when I see your work and Jean's prodigious output. Eric's site theme is a bit special too, not forgetting SD's offerings!

Keep at it, and ocPortal should be able to offer future users several alternatives to the default.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Thanks Fletch, though I hardly compare to the brilliant work that Jean and others produce.

You should give it a try. I have found that ocPortal is easy to theme for, it just has lots of image files but with a few tricks (like using css instead of image files for buttons)  it becomes a lot easier.

I haven't ever been able to make a theme succesfully for the likes of Joomla, Drupal, or e107. But with ocPortal I can, even if my themes are just basically css edits to a theme-wizard default ocPortal theme lol.
