Upgraded to ocPortal 9.04

Click on the above image for a live demo.

After weeks of tweaking, I am pleased to publish 'The Forest' ocPortal theme, upgraded for version 9.04!

It is the theme model which represents best my concept for story driven websites. Like with the previous version it is showcasing distinct "welcome" and "site" pages, but it is doing so in just one theme instead of two. There are new multimedia buttons on the welcome screen with integrated Photo gallery, Flash content, and YouTube videos presentations. There is a more obvious Icon-link on the signpost for the main Site. Mobile devices will automatically be presented with a different, fluid background with fixed link buttons on the upper left side of the screen. My attempt to accommodate Mobile devices is a simple one which may not always work properly depending on the device integrated browser. My main reason for using the mobile feature is more targeted at the small screens such as laptops, netbooks and tablets.

This new 9.04 platform will make it easier for me to port all my previous themes and present new stunning ideas I'm presently working on for new themes.

You will find extra information on how to implement this theme in the download section.

If you need help in changing the existing content for yours, ask in the Themeing section of the forums and I'll do my best to address your issues.

As usual, your comments and suggestions are welcome!

Jean,

You out did your self! it looks great.

I find that version 9 is much more difficult than v8.

Jean, this is really top!
Viewed with chrome.

Opera has some problems with the background image, gives a white screen.

More difficult? It should be a lot simpler, we've merged templates, unified styles, restructured styles to be more logical, and renamed things to be a lot clearer.

The only thing 'harder' I think could be the complex link set styles, but those weren't customisable before anyways.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thank you all for your generous show of support and kind words! :)

The Forest theme was one of my first themeing project with ocPortal and I felt sad leaving it behind with version 9. It took me a little while to get familiar enough with the style variables through experimentation, but the well commented css structure kept me going. I think that one of the most important innovation for themers is the merged templates simplification. GLOBAL_HTML_WRAP.tpl is a gem and with a bit of constructive tempcode you can get it to do practically anything. I hardly need to touch any other templates now.

Thanks for this info Harry. I find Opera to be overtly fiddly on several CSS rules and super slow, but I'll try to find out where it is failing in this case; maybe with 'background-attachment:fixed'.

A Christmas version for the holidays is coming soon!

Cheers!:)

Don't know if this is the background css Jean, because I used this in my themes to, and had no problems in opera. Sometimes Opera has his little problems, but slow hmm Its faster then firefox mostley  ;)

But further great Job Jean.

But, this is the most amazing template I've EVER seen. WOW!

Thanks for you great comment and glad you like this theme!

There was a problem with Firefox and Opera in the first download of this theme, but it has since been fixed as I recall.

Can you see the background on this Demo site ?

There are two landing pages, the Welcome page with the animation and the Site Page; I assume you are talking about the Welcome page.

Jean,

It's a very interesting theme.

Just a note from a cantankerous view, but there a few things that will make me shut a browser window faster than auto-playing sounds and music.  Unless it's something I absolutely have to view, as soon as auto-sound starts I close the browser window and never go back.

Just something to think about in case there are others out there like me.    ;)

Hi,
Thanks for reporting this.
I'm using Firefox 21 and have no such problem.

Your browser settings may affect the page in different ways. I've tried to test as much as I could, but with different browser versions popping up like popcorn it is difficult to catch everything.
  • Browser cache should be cleared and refreshed between versions.
  • Javascript should be enabled
  • Some animations require Adobe Flash. If not present, it should fall back to a normal background.
  • The page is mobile devices enabled.
  • The assumption is for a Fixed-width setup, if installed in a Fluid-width environment it might not perform as expected
  • It also assumes that separate Welcome and Site pages will be enabled during ocPortal's installation.
Harry-S has mentionned a similar problem with Opera and I will be looking at the theme in the next few days to find the cause with a solution if possible.

Hello Juan,
I have unhappily removed access to all of my Themes demo sites a short while ago as they suffered unrelenting attacks, not at the level of the ocPortal programs, which were never breached, but on the Hosting Server. Each time gigabytes of backups were restored, the server was breached within a few hours, disrupting all my other sites. Unfortunately I am no longer able to show a live demo for each one of my Themes which leaves me very disappointed.

However, I have just tested the installation of the Forest 2.0 theme and can report that it works just fine with the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome. Opera still has a problem with the Welcome splash screen, while the rest of the site works as good as its competitors. Opera is built around the Blink layout engine like the latest version of Chrome, so I don't see why it cannot render the splash screen as well.

Jean

EDIT: 12/03/2013 -
Fixed problems with Opera not showing the background image for the Splash Page (Welcome Zone). It should now work fine with modern browsers' latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. You can verify this by loading the demo with your favorite browser.
