Hi, this is my first post and I don't really know anything about CSS so I'm following the tutorial located here to set my ocPortal page as a fixed width.

http://ocportal.com/docs/tut_fixed_width.htm

But I can't get it to work. No matter where i paste the code, it doesn't affect the layout.

Okay you'll need to:

1) Create a new theme

2) Add this code to the CSS:

Code

#main_website { /* #main_website targets only the main site screen, avoiding frames etc */
   background: red; /* this is the background seen around our fixed width */
}
#main_website #body_inner {
   width: 980px;
   position: relative;
   margin: 0 auto 0 auto;
   background: white; /* set the background colour back to white for the area within our fixed width */
}

3) Set the theme to display on the correct zone (note that by default, custom themes will not show up on the Admin Zone, so test it out in a new window/tab on your main/site zone!)

If you've pasted the code in the right place, then the problem might be that you are not actually viewing the correct theme. Check the theme settings itself, and make sure it is set to show up on the site zone!

Wierd, that's the exact same thing I did with my theme.  But it worked.  I didn't do the part to get rid of the zone menu though.  I wanna use that.  Next issue is that I have a banner that spans the new fixed width.  It displays properly in firefox.  but in IE, there's some space between the banner and the zone menu.

Sorry, I was messing with it.  It's back to the way it was now.  I noticed that in IE 8, it looks like the logo covers up the zone menu.  Lower versions of IE, i get my banner, then some blank space, then the zone menu.

Firefox is fine.  I need help getting it to display properly in IE

Anyone? How about help just increasing the size of the header so I can put a taller logo, and have the zone menu not be misaligned?

I cannot see what is wrong, while using IE8, but I did address an issue with IE8 in my tutorial here:
ocPortal.com - View topic: Basic Theme Modifications - Part 2

I don't know if it is the same issue, but take a look.
If not, please give more details on the problem, maybe with a picture and I'll know better how to help.:)

Ok, i've gotten everything setup the way i want it.  I have my banner uploaded and it works on every part of the site except the forums.

It is looking for the banner in:
/forum/uploads/banners/banner.jpg

but I need to get it to look in:
/uploads/banners/banner.jpg

Where might i be able to point it to do that?

Are you using the banner rotation system, or are you talking about the big logo at the top?

I'm having another issue now. I'm trying to add a background image to the site but It's not showing up.

I've added this to my global.css in the .re_body

background-image: url('{$IMG,TC}');

Edit: I tried this same thing on another theme that wasn't modified for fixed width and it works. What could I be doing wrong?
