How on the main page do I add blocks to the right side?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

hmm I am still having trouble getting to the page to even be able to add blocks to the right hand side.
If I click on edit  in the middle that just does the middle blocks, and if I click on edit on the one unde the left it just has those blocks. where is a edit whole page.

Ah, I see your problem. If you'd like to add something to the right, but there is currently no right, you need to go into the Admin Centre and add it. There is no "whole page", just the central "main" page and optional "menu pages" surrounding it.
I'm not sure which version of ocPortal you're using, but assuming you want to add a right hand menu to the root zone, you'd go to the "Comcode pages" section of the Admin Centre and tell it to add ":menu_right". If you wanted to add a right hand menu to the membersonly zone (this zone was introduced in version 2.5), you'd add 'membersonly:menu_right'.

We are already planning on making all this more user-friendly for version 3 :).

Display sub page without right hand menu's

I have a link from my home page (site page) and would like to display the sub page without the right hand pannel. I have experimented with the 'wide' tag but can't seem to get the page to display with just the right hand set  of menus. Any ideas?

Hi,

The 'correct' way to do that would be to:
  • put that page in a (possibly new) zone
  • set the panel_left for that zone to redirect to the panel_left of whatever zone contains your normal panel_left (via a redirection page – under 'Structure' in the Admin Zone)
  • if it's not already, make the panel_right for that zone to be blank
  • link to your page in it's new correct zone; call the zone '_SEARCH' in your pagelink if you want to be able to move it around between zones freely.

Themeing

Thanks for that. Iv'e created new Zones and they work great, I'm impressed at how easy it is as ocportal takes care of all the hard work for me. I would also like to remove the helper section and edit the icons that appear in the forums section (Forums-Rules-Members-Groups-Unread-Recommend). Is there a tutorial/menu edit option,  on how to do this?

remove the helper section

This can be done via editing of the GLOBAL.tpl template in your theme. It's quite technical, as it's template programming, but it's very doable once you understand Tempcode.

edit the icons that appear in the forums section

Just hold down ctrl+alt+shift and then click the image. You'll be given the opportunity then to upload a new image.

Is there a tutorial/menu edit option,  on how to do this?

This kind of stuff is covered in various tutorials, mostly the 'Themeing' and 'Advanced Themeing' ones.

Thanks,

In relation to editing the icons that appear in the forums section, is it possible to edit the links associated with each icon?

Hello,

I believe you are referring to the horizontal stretch of links that appear above forum pages, amongst a few others.
The 'OCF_NAVIGATION' template performs this. The template is fed with a hardcoded list of links to use, however if you desire you can rewrite the template so that all the links are layed out in the template itself.

In other words, you can throw out our hardcoded defaults, and just put whatever Tempcode/HTML you think is better into that template :).
