I am looking for an IT Company based theme.  I say I am looking for one just because I am low on time to get the site I am working on built and online for a client.

I am still learning XHTML so I am slightly lost when it comes to digging thru the code, but slowly working my way thru it.  I love all the features ocPortal has to offer.  Just under time constraints that are making it hard to learn as I go.

So if you can help me out please do.

The IT Company is a hosting based firm.  So I need to show hosting plans for different server platforms.  They also do desktop computer support and retail as well.

You need to be more specific with exactly what it is you are looking for.

If you are looking for some direction on how to create a custom theme I am sure you will find lots of help if we know what you need help with.

Best place to start is the page rendering tools in the footer. They are really great and you can do a lot with them.

If you are looking for someone to create your clients custom theme for you….how much are you offering for this work?

Looking for where and what code I need to change to get the login fields and the navigation in the header.  I also want to center the logo and have the slogan under neath the logo.

The old page is at www.ahardriveworld.com.  I am looking to recreate the header from that site onto the ocportal  install I am working on.

Still digging my way thru the forum and tutorials on how to do this but not getting very far very fast.

Ok, I just have a minute for a quick reply but it should help out some.

The navigation is already in the header, you just need to customise it the way you want it look.

All the CSS for menus can be found in global css and you can do a lot with it. You shouldn't have any troubles finding it, they are all grouped together.

If you want to change the zone menu to a drop down menu look in the header template for where it says menu_type_zone and change zone to dropdown.

While you are looking through global.css you will find tips that are commented out that will help you to change the header to the way you want it to look.

If you edit the css through the page rendering tools you will find all kinds of tips and links to tutorials that will help you. You will also find it really easy to find what you need to edit as it works very much like firebug does.

A couple of points to raise:
  • If you are under the gun as far as producing a site for your clients, then I would STRONGLY advise that ocPortal is not for you - just yet!

because

  • It isn't a simple case of firing up Dreamweaver (you use DW for your ahardriveworld.com site) as you cannot edit ocPortal templates in DW

On the other hand, if you think ocPortal will answer all your needs (the majority of us on this forum do), then take some time out and read the 'tutes' and watch the vids and you will be as 'up-to-speed' as the rest of us.

Good luck with your project.

P.S. Looks like Brian beat me to the advice with some solid stuff that you should take aboard …

thanks

Thanks for the tips guys.

Fletch - ahardriveworld.com is a really crappy MS Expressions template that I made in 2 minutes lol

I've gone back to the clients and told them that customizing the theme is going to take me a week or 2 to complete.  Now they are telling me that the site doesn't need to be live til 8/1 so I got some time to get it going.

That's good. You can take it a bit slower now, but not TOO slow. There's much to learn with this first-rate CMS, but it is totally satisfying in the end!

The "Fan in training" under my username is an understatement.  Once I figure this thing out it'll completely redo all of my sites for the better and easier.

Welcome to the ocPortal experience,ThyRaven, I like your ambition and aparent drive, hang on to it-it will come in handy and stick with ocP. The first climb with ocP is an real EVENT. You have a uphill road to go in the next month to meet your goals but remember it's a good view from the top of the first hill …but you've gotta get there to experience it.

Remember your enthusiasm today, hold on to that drive and just keep going. Your going to have lots of questions, the Forum here is a treasure trove of pure gold, but you gotta bring your flashlight and do some searching and learn from the experiences, discoveries and solutions posted in it. When you get stuck, and you will, there are really good and dedicated ocPortalheads (has that been used before?) here that are ready to help you climb that hill. You'll get there…

Got your climbing shoes on? Let's go…

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  Been making great headway at ocPortal and am getting more and more excited to get this site launched with the features I am finding.

But now I have one thing I cant sort out and havent seen another post of this (note: my searching abilities such so I may be using the wrong keywords), but I am trying to move the Site | Forums | (etc) line up into the gray space at the top of my site.  Please see image below.  Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Not 100% sure what you are attempting, ThyRaven, so I'll hazard a guess.

You will need to 'place' your zone menu in the area you want it to go by editing the #global_zones in global.css.

Here are a couple of screencaps of a very down-and-dirty 'before' and 'after' edit using Firebug. It should give you an idea of what you need to experiment with.

Hope that was of some help!

That's exactly what I want to do, just nothing seems to be working.  I tried setting the color to transparent and no change.  I got it to move to the top now but I cant get it to move back to the left.

Any ideas?

If you are still working with #global_zones all you need to adjust is the text alignment.

Here is an example from my own USER theme. I stress the 'user' bit because you ought not to be editing the default under any circumstances (an error I made when I first started using ocPortal - never repeated):

Code

#global_zones {
    background-color: #395A6F;
    color: #EDF2F5;
    font-size: 0.85em;
    font-weight: normal;
    height: 16px;
    margin-top: 171px;
    padding: 7px 5px 6px 0;
    text-align: right;
}
I think you can work out what needs to be done, and don't forget to adjust the padding so that  you get it lined up exactly where you want it on your page. The left padding in my example is shown as '0', which means the menu will be tight to the left border.

Shout if you need more of an explanation.

still can't get it to move back to the left.  I am starting to think that maybe it can't move left due to the logo image. here is what I am working with:

#global_zones {
    {+START,IF,{$MOBILE}}
        text-align: center !important;
        margin: -75 ;
        padding: 10px 0px 9px 0;
        font-size: 0.95em;
    {+END}
    {+START,IF,{$NOT,{$MOBILE}}}
        text-align: right;
        margin-top: -8px;
        padding: 10px 5px 6px 0;
        background: url('{$IMG,zone_gradiant}') repeat-x;
    {+END}
    min-height: 15px;
    font-weight: bold;
    color: #261d14; /* */
    background-color: transparent;/* */
    background-position: center;
}

Hi ThyRaven,

The background-position property sets the starting position of a background image. If you set it like you have here: "background-position: center" you will have difficulty moving your text to the left. Try changing the position to the left. It would be a lot easier for any of us to help you out if you were to give a "link" to your site, if only temporary.;)

ThyRaven,

The following illustration will give you an idea of what is presently going on with your header:

The global_banner is positioned on top of the global_zones (including the menu zone text. If you move the global zone up, it will be under the banner.You cannot move the global_zone to the left, since it is already all the way to the left margin, but being cut-off by the floating Logo to the left.

All this is really a series of boxes (div on your page) being positioned in cascading layers. You need to set the position for each one like a puzzle to get the final desired effect.

Knowing exactly where you want to position your menu is important since these boxes will all need to be rearranged accordingly.

Do you want to keep the global_zones gradiant blue bar, or have it transparent?
Where exactly do you want to position the left-most menu text?
Do you want to keep the banner in that position?
Your answers to these questions will help determine the next steps!
Cheers,
Jean

Wot! Jean said!

Can be achieved, but as Jean has already eloquently stated, you need to decide where you want things before you start hacking your CSS.

The following is an example, but not something I would suggest you use as I had to get rid of the 'banner' and one of the background images:

Using your Idea Fletch, I would increase the Height of the Logo to include the banner + the global_zones heights, cut off around the servers and let it float over the global_zones gradiant. This could be accomplished mostly by manipulating the images.

Here is my suggestion:
