I am still banging my head over trying to create child category images to show up on my parent category page.

Is there a way to associate an image with a given category id and then call it in?

I have the CSS completed, the basic list structure, page links, etc but just need to logic/syntax to create the subcat images. This seems sooo basic, but difficult to find in the forums.

Do I use code from the ecommerce catalog? on pages? Any direction would be highly appreciated.

thanks
David

Hi,

I'm guessing you're coming from the world of Joomla, where the article/category/section system is the heart of it.

ocPortal is a bit different, our pages are more like web pages (i.e. don't have special fields, like thumbails), and our news system runs independently – they're quite separate. Personally I think I'd either put in the HTML manually, or template up a menu and embed that on the Comcode page (menus can have per-link icons). Alternatively the news system does support icons for news categories, or it is possible to create and template a catalogue with whatever field types you like.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Thanks, I will keep trying.

Where I get stuck is converting the Child Pages template into a "Menu" template that can accept icons, and where to draw the images in from. Not sure if they should be background images of a div (Surround) or rather inserted images, like a button to make it work.

The other aspect is that I was trying to do all the coding on the front-end with WYSIWYG turned on and off vs doing it as a template and inserting it as a block.
