First post ;)

Hi there,

This is my first post here; I've been using ocPortal for quite some time, but I've never personally gotten involved in themeing beyond the basics before. Now I've decided that I have to learn!

My first question (of what will undoubtedly be many) is how do you remove the Avatar and submitter from the main_news block?

I just want to remove the whole box, leaving just the text there. I will be positioning the box so that the text appears framed as part of the background image, so the submitter details are unnecessary.

Thanks,

GW

Hi and Welcome Gridwalker!

As a first undertaking, your mod project is not of the easiest kind and might demand some knowledge of XHTML and PHP since it will involve changing core templates. So, be sure to understand what you need to do before making any changes and their consequences for future upgrades.

You can have a look at what you will be facing by following these indications:

In the footer were it says select page rendering tools, choose show template edit links. That will show you all the templates used on a page with a link to edit them.

This is a contextual editing tool, which means you will be editing resources that were used by the screen you came from. This allows you to easily make changes for screens you're looking at. To make changes for resources used on a different screen just navigate to that screen and re-access the tool.

Look at this template:
NEWS_PIECE_SUMMARY.tpl

Cheers!

Hi there Jean, thanks for your help!

I've seen you about on the Forums and had a feeling that you'd be the man to help. I saw that you'd made a similar mod on one of your themes, so I knew that you could do it ;)

I've got the news block stripped back and I will be framing that as soon as my artist has finished making the background image. My next major task is going to be themeing catalogues, which I am sure is going to be much harder.

I have 2 catalogues to theme: one field-mapped and one tabular list.

I'm going to start with the Field Map; I want to strip out the first column containing the field names and to apply better styling to the catalogue contents.

I think I should be able to achieve most of what I want through simple CSS changes (cheating a little by styling the field contents directly using comcode) however removing the first column in that template is concerning me slightly.

I plan to go through that section of the designer themes tutorial this evening, to see if I can work it out. Any tips would be appreciated ;)

Thanks for the good comments!

As you’ve noted, a lot can be achieved by editing the css files and they are easy to find by using the contextual editing tool or with something like “Firebug” for Firefox. Deeper style and concept grooves can be erased or added through the extensive set of templates. However, I urge caution when dealing with wide-ranging modifications as they tend to lockout a site design and make it more challenging to apply major upgrades down the road. ocPortal’s dedicated owners are constantly pushing the bleeding edge of its CMS with innovative concepts and are unafraid and unabashed to issue regular updated versions to this great software.

There are many here in these forums who will jump in and offer experienced base help when needed. The trick to get the best response is to make your request as detailed as possible, including links to the site and commented images. Sometimes a “Jing” video link can best convey your message.

So don’t hesitate to ask!

Jean
