tutorial

Hi All,

Is there a tutorial on how to install/configure the classified ads module?  With maybe some examples of what others have implemented?  My idea is to have this on my site as a free posting/list of items for free and for sale regionally.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in Advance ~larry1957

Do you support classified ads?
Classified ads are supported in the 'catalogues' system. You'd add a catalogue for the ads:
  • you'd define some fields (such as 'Ad title' and 'Ad message')
  • you'd define timeout settings
  • you'd then add some categories to the catalogue
  • you'd assign various permissions so that members could submit to this catalogue
  • you'd link the catalogue onto your menus
  • possible you'd place a 'recent entries' block onto your front page

Hi,

Please see my topic in the staff chat forum regarding solicitation of requests for tutorials :).

There's no classified ads tutorial right now I'm afraid.

I'd appreciate it if every user thought of 30 tutorial ideas and got them posted up / voted for them if already up - it would help our future tutorial planning a lot.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

Hi Chris
I will look to post tutorial requests.  What I was really trying to find is; Is there a classified ads module availible, I have found numerous references to it as well as to the "unofficial classified ads addon" and also a listing in addons for "Classified Ads by Chris Graham "  What I want to know is there a classified ads module that will let me have a basic classified ad page which members can post items for sale, free, trade.  I do not need to charge to post at this time.  If you or anyone can point me to where I can find this….  I would be extremely happy :|

If you don't even need to charge, pure catalogues will do it. Just set one up with the fields you want and the privileges you want. That classified ads addon allows charging for such a catalogue.

This would be an ideal tutorial though.

Chris thanks for the help. I have successfully created a classified catalog with categories and fields that I want.

2 questions:

1. Is there a catalog /block that I can reference in my menu?

2. I wish to use your addon as I may wish to charge/ require subscription for sponsor ads, I believe your addon will allow this.  How is this presnted to my members? the control panel through a menu button, does the display/control panel come up on the classifed ads page or do they have to select a option to display control panel?

Thanks - well maybe 3 questions..

Thanks for your time

Also will the addon columize work with your classfieds ad management addon?  That way I could have my members ads be displayed like a newspaper and they could still use the control panel to pay for ads/ecommerce/post?  Thanks for all your help.

I'm afraid me providing these detailed responses would take more than a few minutes and be too close into technical support, which is one of the things I/we do commercially. I don't mind sometimes quickly saying whether a broad feature exists or not, but details and instructions aren't something I can usually get into on the forum due to lack of resources and funding for it.

If you think your questions are generic enough, or can be phrased as generic, try and group them in a logical order and post them on the tracker issue I posted for a classified ad tutorial – then whoever is writing this may be able to cover the material. 0001048: Classified ads - ocPortal feature tracker
