IE is an idiot

Ok, am I doing something wrong or is this an IE problem?

I'm using a background image with a gradient–it's impossible to determine a perfect background image height as the image will show differently on short pages and long pages, so I used the background-color property to show a color beneath the background image. I remember having this problem a while back as well, but I don't remember if I fixed it or threw away the whole "having a background image" idea. :P Any suggestions on what I should do to fix this?

The background image is in a .png format, and I just changed it to a .gif–it's still there, but it's an improvement. I'm going to mess around with some different file extensions to see if I can fix it (it seems as if there's some incompatibilty problems when using .png images for backgrounds).

Also, the page was testing with Opera, so it's not an IE problem (*sighs* Thank god! I love IE. :D)

Run the PNG through a program called PNG Gauntlet. IE has problems rendering Photoshop PNG files, but PNG Gauntlet's optimisation will remove "gamma", which resolves the problem.

I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms.
