Get the download minimal for modem users

Hi,

I startup reading about theming but as I see how little topics I can read and learn in the same time, I run out of it, so I thought putting a question in here, maybe I shouldn't, please say so, but otherwise I could use some help, so if you think I'm doing wrong asking please say so and point me in the right direction.

I downloaded some themes for different reasons (most because I know to little of the theming system):
The Forest Because its beauty and rest in it, but also for the split between welcome and site theme. The splash screen need to be extended with a picture of the founder Deepa (my wife) between the trees and some choices to go on (3) like the little sign right under to choose quickly for emergency help and the foodbank and the normal entrance. We also have normaly a restplace/chapel where people can meditate we like to use the big picture of forest for.
The dessert one, for the square header with movie, where I have trued to get the movie out and put a header picture of 1020x314 in place and another background, but that coorupted the thing so I let go.
The Dark red for the red basic colour I thought to combine with the dessert one, because I need a big picture as header, but I give up as its not working.
The Portal conflict very tempting theme but has those light bubbles that popping up in header I can't get away.

That are some of them with some remarks, so you have an idea whats important for us.
the I got an idea thats maybe something for more then just me: Have a theme where people can upload a header to a known place with a known name in combination a menu bar (the zone-bar?) with the wizzard to colour the rest of the theme. Then we have a working and safe theme because we don't have to change things already while we have to learn first to keep it safe, but still can make a quick & safe start without to many probs (as the colour wizzard was ment for, this could be an exention for this?)
Some regio's on the world have no quick internet, I have some members that still have to connect with a modem by phone. For those, and I think we are not the only one in this, I like to create a kind of light version installed like theme's so I can connect them to a group so they can load the site without first making coffee and take a nap (not to speak of the cost of calling in by phone).

Is this something that can be accomplished without to much work in a way it can be used by starters with ocPortal, so all we have to do is offering some header pictures to get them (and us) start quickly?

Greetings Puran.

Very interesting post Puran!

You are certainly at the right place to ask those questions, and I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions that will surely help you out.

The first one I can give you is about the header.tpl which contains the flash movies I'm using for the themes you've mentioned. Open it with the template editor and find the section of code that start with <object>and ends with </object> and delete the code including object. This will clear up the theme of the flash and enable you to replace it with an image of your choice.
Outside of the flash, my themes are basically very light and with a few coaching ideas, you will be modifying them like a pro. Have a look at my basic tutorials to have an idea of how to place your own image in the header.tpl. The themes are all based on an ocPortal XHTML/CSS map that you can find here. This might help you make more sense of what to look for in your modification efforts.

The second suggestion is how to get the most help with your design:
  1. Create a test site
  2. Do the basic wizardry to it
  3. Try to make the basic modifications you would like to see
  4. Open a thread here with a link to your project
  5. make sure you install the firebug plugin for FF
  6. Indicate your problem and objectives (one at a time)
  7. You should receive near instant guidance from all of us interested in your success. This is like having a tutor to guide you in your project
I understand how theming can be perceived as a tremendous learning curve to grapple, but taking it one step at a time with some guidance and it will all make sense after just a few tries.

Hoping I understood the meaning of your questions.

Cheers!
Jean

Hi Puran.

I think you will find that by going through Jean's tutorial, the learning curve flattens out quickly.

I took a look at your sites, My Dutch is not very good, so I can only help in English.

Good luck with your themes,
Doc

Partly ok, partly missing one, but that is ofcourse because of my writing and certainly not of your reading!
I put in the idea to make a basic theme for starters with a header with a picture in the line of using the wizzard to make a color for the whole site and adapt the logo. So one could start quicker and then learn to change small peaces of the theme to add what they wished, but they got a start and don't rush to the next cms/portal (well, I can't help they call those others that way ;) ) leaving ocPortal. Also we could offer some pictures to help them to ideas.
Beside that I need help for our non-profite site as I realy did run out of time and can't affort to pay other then points.

and Psydoc, we are of the same age I thought. I can't espect everybody to read and understand Dutch.
:offtopic: In short we are a bunch of people that see the things going bad on this world, more and more is money the boss and lots off people are in trouble because they can't cope with it, physically or mentally, so we try to help with food and healing and spiritual support in the directionof Buddhism/Krishna but ofcourse respect whatever they believe as long as they respect others. The only way someone can be enlighted is from there own heart, so we don't like to change people but learn them to take care for thereselves and hope they start teaching others. If its good people will follow there hearts.
We have the site in dutch but will soon start to translate all to other languages, but keep it dutch because there we started.

Thanks for reading,
Greetings Puran

Great Idea, Puran!
Actually, there are 2 wizards (theme and logo) doing this and pointing to "manage theme images" to edit the logo/-logo image, which is sort of another wizard. My basic tutorials explain how to use this logo/-logo image in creative ways. But I understand what you're proposing: One wizard combining all this with a choice of stock images similar to choosing an avatar with  the member's profile tool. This would indeed make for an easy start!

Beside that I need help for our non-profite site as I realy did run out of time and can't affort to pay other then points.
No points required, just put your ideas forward as I've suggested and you'll get the help.:)

Cheers!

Thanks Jean, you made my day!

The first thing about the header.tpl works partly very well ;). I got the movies away AND the theme is still working, two important things. The rest is a puzzle as I got one uploaded and given a codename, but then? I have to puzzle further and if I don't find an answere I'll be back tomorrow.

Thanks again, Puran.

Hi,

I have a question about the Forest.
I see the width is fixed, so the sign to enter the site is out of reach when working with a size of 1024 and little bigger.
Is that to make centered but variable so poor people with an old monitor (like some in India still work with and I know someone in France, living in the middle of nowhere has a very slow connection, ) so the sign is visuable always?
How and where do I influance the place where the sign is placed and can I change the ID and picture of them so that I can have three signs?

Thanks in advance, Puran.

Hi Puran,
Actually the Welcome Zone “Forest2” is not a fixed-width theme and will collapse fluidly on the right side of the screen, but as you noticed the sign will be out of reach in a 1024 resolution. This is only due to the large size of the painting ‘image’ (1920 x 1200) I intended it to be viewed with large monitors; the reason I call it a panoramic theme. But the concept does not have to be exclusively for large monitors if you are willing to apply a few simple modifications. If you want to use the same image in a smaller screen you can reduce its scale with a graphic editor so that the sign is viewable on a 1024 screen. Or, you can find your favorite image and add sign(s) in a fashion similar to what I did.

Here is how you would proceed:
You will need to edit two files: HEADER.tpl and Global.css

First in Global.css, at the very end find: #main_website and change the width and height parameters according to your resized image. Don’t forget to also replace BG.jpg with your new image using the Manage theme images ‘wizard’ finding BG  from the list and uploading the revised one.

Second: Also at the end of Global.css find #sign and adapt the parameters according to the size and location of your new sign. This is just an empty container for the sign, which will enable you to place the real sign image inside it with the header.tpl. You can place as many as you want on your background image—just replicate the selector code–call them sign1-sign2…etc. By changing the margin parameters: "561px 0 0 1127px" you control the locations on screen.

Third: Find in HEADER.tpl

Code

<div id="sign"><a href="{$CUSTOM_BASE_URL*}/site/index.php?page=start"><img src="{$IMG,signlink}" title="Yes! That's it! You found the trail...Go ahead, follow it!" /></a></div>
and modify the text and image link to correspond with yours. Simply duplicate this div for all the signs you want to add on your background. Each new sign image must be added to your "theme/images_custom" on the server—use the Manage theme images ‘wizard’ if you don’t use an FTP uploader.

If may look complex at first glance, but if you tackle this one step at a time, your understanding will become clearer with each success. Firefox–>Firebug is essential to fine-tune the placement of your signs in real-time.

Thank you very much for your answere. Its a big help.
Links, the first big link is to our old site (sorry, no ocP yet). If ready its gonna replace by a startmenu to the new sites. I work on ocP sites 5.0.3 and v6 in their respective sites, see the links in my signline on the last line.

Thanks again, Puran.

OK, saw the links!
However, they are all closed for the moment.
I suggest you work from version 6 if it is upgraded to RC as it already incorporate the latest CSS and templates and it will be easy to upgrade to the final version when it is ready.
