As of the next beta release of ocPortal 4, ocPortal will be free software.

Those who have been following ocProducts over the years will know that ocPortal has never gained the well-known position in the CMS world it should have. This is mainly because ocPortal is commercial whilst most competing products are free. Our sales have actually declined since we launched ocPortal 1, despite the large and continued investment we've placed, our ongoing community engagement, and our many unique advances (such as the Theme Wizard, and hack-attack detection). The reality is, most user's nowadays don't expect software to be commercial, and commercial software is all but closed to most kinds of forms of promotion such as:
  • community word-of-mouth;
  • web hosting software bundles;
  • reviews of software that are so often limited to only the free options.
It's a vicious circle that frankly has worked against us. For example, the CMS market is now in a position where the only books that get published cover free software (Drupal, Joomla, etc) because those are popular - and because of the presence of these books in shops, the popularity increases further. There's currently a competition on called the 'Open Source CMS Award' - we could never win it even though ocPortal already actually technically is Open Source, because it's essentially a popularity contest.

ocPortal is our baby, and we want it to get widely used more than just about anything else. This is why we are releasing it entirely for free, no strings attached:
  • No registration.
  • No forced display of copyright or logo or ads.
  • No commercial 'pro' versions.
  • No 'free one-minute, paid the-next' (*cough* - Invision Board).
We are entirely committed to supporting ocPortal as Free Open Source software, and to supporting the community.

Free is good for the user - but we're not fans of most free webapps (which is one reason why we have remained commercial until now). You just need to go to their websites to see how slated they are towards the interests of the most engaged members of the community, rather than the needs of regular users. Navigation of these sites is like moving through carnival, not getting introduced to a piece of software. And, the software itself is rarely designed to take into account the full needs of the regular user either.
There are some exceptions though. For example, we think Magento is excellent (it's a free eCommerce package). This is our vision too - to become free, whilst maintaining our tight focus on efficiently fulfilling the full needs of the regular user. ocProducts will be available to take on paid work for organisations, and we hope this will allow our ongoing development of ocPortal.

We hope those who have purchased older versions of ocPortal will support our decision. We understand that it might seem unfair that you have paid for software and now a new improved version will be free for other users. However, we have every intention of using ocPortal 4's "freeness" to grow the community, and this benefits everyone in a big way – more addons, more themes, more translations, more discussion, quicker identification of bugs, and wider feedback.
We hope that now that we're not trying to make any money from ocPortal, it'll knock down barriers, and that a wider community spirit and evangelism will emerge.

(Until ocPortal 4 finishes the beta/RC stage we'll still be offering registration through our site, for anyone wanting to run ocPortal 3 in registered mode. We will also continue to support ocPortal 3 with patch releases for some time. ocPortal 4 is expecting to make it to RC release within the coming few weeks.)

I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.

No 'whinges' from me.

I shall continue to use version 3, but I will investigate version 4 for a future transition to that platform.

I hope that both versions will continue to attract the same support from you guys, and I expect it will, because it appears that it is your vision to make this the premiere CMS.

As it should be!

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Well-settled

I agree with Graham, that if a cms wanted to be populair then you have to search it into Open Source. In the Netherlands the Official Departments  use more and more Open Source software.

This can be a good choice for OCportal to get more interested for them to…

Well, I think it a smart decision on your part if that's your goal to compete with the big boys and further develop OcPortal. You have a fine product and if I read your post correctly you will be available for development?

If that is in-fact the case, please let me know when you will be available   I for one am so sick of trying to find competent developers that don't rip you off. And who better to do custom development that the developer himself heh… I think you will see much more action (funds) with this format.

A dream of mine come true this is awesome.
Maybe then opensourcecms.com will allow you to put your system on their site.
Although they do not like that the installer asks for the ftp info at least thats what I found out when I asked them why it was not allowed on the site.

Oh and about the invision board thing ya I remember that and it upset a lot of people. I got a life time subscription from them shortly before that happened so I have only had to pay once and I have 2 of those.

Both the new things I am reading about ocportal 4 and ipb 3 Now called IP.board 3 are great and I can not wait to use both and together too czu I could create a great site.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I do not think it is unfair in the slightest.
In fact the only reason I purchased ocportal was my way of donating to a great product i did not even use the thing that came with my subscription (I mean the thing the removed the ads) I like people knowing what software I use so it did not bother me that the logo was at the bottom and on the side.

Absolutely - anyone looking for work doing should get in contact with us :).

Yes, I recently noticed this. It looks like they got the wrong impression that the quick installer is required - they needed the manual installer.

How much is the work going to cost if I have you make some thing for me?
Although maybe I need to ask that in private but was wondering if you had a set rate?

amichan,

Just submit a Support ticket by clicking on the Contact Us link on the front page, then select the appropriate Ticket Type and submit your request. Within a day or 2 you will get back a very professional looking quote for the work that you requested. The quote will give details of the work to be performed, approximate time to complete the work and the cost. I have done this before and was impressed with the timeliness of the Quote and the professionalism. Hope this helps…

Ami,

No offense taken, as a matter of a fact I did not take your comments as rude at all.

I can't wait for 4.0 to come out. With it being free it will finally get the attention that it so richly deserves. I have used just about every other CMS system out there and I find OCP to be so far ahead of the competition that I am surprised that it is not more highly recognized. I use the word competition very loosely since OCP has none in my view. I think that the change in policy is going to have a very dramatic effect on the attention of this software.

I hope that this does not hurt the income to this very deserving team. My hope is that they still provide a donation link and that everyone makes very judicious use of it.

I feel the same way.
I have as well tried many cms's and always come back to this one.
I only found 2 that have features close to it.
MKportal being one of them how ever that has huge issues with Mac's browser support, specially os 9. I even found IE 7 browser support issues, works fine with firefox though.

Bitweaver is the other one but it has no forum integration and other features it is lacking as well.
