ocPortal 3.1 Beta 1 is expected for release later on tonight. 3.1 is the direct continuation of the 3.0.x series, but rather than being a patch, adds substantial new features.

In summary, the new features included are:
  • Substantial improvements to the points system
  • Improvements between the newsletters, quizzes, and points
  • Substantial improvements to the point-store
  • A new menu type, which makes replacing the default zone menu with a custom one easy
  • The ability to disable the help panel via OcCLE
  • 3 'easter eggs' that may be enabled via OcCLE

The point system has been improved to allow:
  • easy reversing of point transactions via the points log
  • reversal of the automatic point allocation for a submission, at the point of editing/deleting that submission

New configurable point awards have been added:
  • for a member having his/her IOTD chosen
  • for a member having his/her poll chosen
  • for a member simply being a member, for each day that they are a member
  • for a member visiting the site on any particular day (to encourage regular re-visits)

The newsletters/quizzes/points have been fused together in a new way, allowing new e-mail marketing possibilities. The new features are:
  • per-quiz point awards. For example, you can give people points for passing a test, or filling in a survey
  • lock down quizzes so they can only be accessed by those who subscribe to a certain newsletter
Between these two features you can encourage newsletters readers to fill in a survey (so that they get some points), and hence effectively track marketing campaigns carried out over the newsletter.

The point-store has been extended, with three new types of configurable product:
  • Purchasing having a topic pinned
  • Purchasing having your member username highlighted in your topic posts (OCF-only)
  • A 'gambling' product, where members may 'take their chances' and try and make a quick profit (but on average, they just lose points – a good lesson in life!)

Whatsmore, two new point-store product classes have been added, that allow you to create products all of your own:
  • you can define simple products that have a description and price, and then the staff are notified to deliver the product manually and charge the member
  • or, you can define complex products based on the granting of temporary permissions. For example, you could add a temporary 'Gallery access' product that grants access to the galleries for the purchaser for a period of one week.

Coming very soon!

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

This is Beta 1 of ocPortal 3.1.

I encourage you all to have a play with this and tell us of any new bugs we might have created. However, this is not a final release and is not appropriate for using to upgrade an ocPortal 3.0.x site – if you do that, it is entirely at your own risk.

Ok I will install it now. I will test it both with IPB and with out.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Just a quick question are all the bugs reported for 3.0.17 fixed in this download, I would assume so but I am not sure.

All the bugs reported for 3.0.17 before this release was made are. Bugs found since will continue to be posted for 3.0.17 until 3.1.0 (non-beta) is released.
