I'm now planning to release beta 5 on approximately next Tuesday, which isn't "this week" as I hoped, so I thought I'd post some of the changes completed already to tide people over…
  • The 'valid file type' checks are now performed in the web browser using Javascript as well as on the web server. This means that you no longer have to upload a file before you find out if it's a valid type or not.
  • Comment topics, OCF quick reply, and support tickets now support 'Preview'
  • Comment posts by the submitter of the content being commented-upon are now highlighted. For example, if a news article is being commented upon, and the submitter of that article makes a comment, the submitters comment will be highlighted.
  • The WYSIWYG editor has been improved in a number of ways:
    • It will now load faster
    • The HTML to Comcode conversion has been improved
    • It feels more integrated
  • The new fields.xml form filter system has been extended to allow development of "content templates". This is advanced functionality that requires XML editing, but is useful for large websites. An example use would be the webmaster of a site creating a special variation of the 'Add news' URL that pre-populates all the fields so that the news article meets certain default settings and a certain structure.
  • We now have support for the Firefox FirePHP addon. Administrators can use this addon to view how ocPortal constructed the screen being viewed:
    • a list of templates used
    • a list of the permission checks performed (very useful in conjunction with keep_su)
    • a list of queries performed
  • To reflect improvements in technology in recent years, we've dropped some of the template coding standards that made things harder to understand but aren't necessary anymore.
  • Chat/IM has been streamlined and improved
  • Improved error detection has been a real goal since the last beta. Various new measures have been put in place to identify bugs that otherwise might have gone unnoticed. In particular, we have been targeting areas such as our server-farm support, and our memory-cache support.
  • A great number of bug fixes

UPDATE: Likely Wednesday (tomorrow). Most of the remaining work is now done.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Chris,

Great info, Great news, thanks for the update, can't wait to try it out. Do you think that this version is close enough to RC/final that an upgrade to final will work? If not then no worry, just getting ready to start a pretty large project and would like to get started with the latest software. Thanks for all of your hard work…

I should get that firefox add on as it seems very nice.
Thanks for the post and keep up the great work.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
