Hi all,

We're hoping to create some new tutorial content for ocPortal and I'd like to have the community decide what that content should actually be, via the tracker. I've seeded in a few ideas myself, but I'd like to see the community posting on there and monitoring (=up-voting) existing suggestions to give us a sense of priority.

For newbie users this is a chance to try and get some of your scenarios documented in step-by-step form. For established users, this is a chance to try and get more advanced scenarios documented, and to grow the community via improved documentation.

1) View existing tutorials ideas (to check you're not adding a duplicate, to up-vote existing ideas, to comment on existing ideas)

2) Request a tutorial

I'm hoping we can get out around one per month initially, with the possibility to ramp up production further if the project is a success.
Of course, anyone can also contribute tutorials – so if you see one you want to do, feel free to grab it.

Thanks!

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Also feel free to duplicate ideas from the book forum. This new focus on a stream of bite-sized tutorials could provide a content foundation for a book, so this idea is not in competition.

For reasons obvious to many, the book project is currently stalled, and suffice to say there's more than one good reason I hope it won't remain stalled.

Mulling it over.

Will keep this thread 'unread' and chip in something when I think it is worthwhile.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

This is a good initiative with an already formidable list of tutorials-to-be.

I used the word formidable because it is at the same time exciting to think that there could be some great tutorials coming our way and also knowing how time consuming making anyone of these can be for the creators.

I'll be watching and collaborating where I can with great interest.

I've just posted a few more myself. I now have it pretty much confirmed that we're going to get a good number of tutorials sponsored by an interested organisation. I'll reveal proper details when it is 100% confirmed and the tutorials are being written, but I wanted to mention this so people know really there is some momentum here.

wow that is cool that someone wants to actualy sponsor some Tut's.

I hope there is some coding Tut's planned in the works. I think it would be good if more coders understood the inner workings of ocPortal clearer so as to boost development of extras.

I may be able to contribute some guides for things like adding quizzes. I don't have any screen shots of the process (yet), but do have some instructions and a list of the questions that need answering put together for my members.

Is there any particular format they need to be in?

That's excellent, thank you :).

There's not really any preferred format, whatever seems appropriate. If you can post it on the Community Docs, we'll eventually be going over those and incorporating it all into the official docs (with credits of course).

You're welcome :)

Okay, I started a page for it there.

I think it needs a bit more work, but it's a start.

Adding Quizzes - ocPortal.com

Edit: Rats, I didn't expand the "advanced" section for the pic. I'll add another with just that.
