The front page of your Admin Zone tells you about the version you're running. We've just overhauled the service that powers this:
  • You won't only be told about the next available version, you'll get full details of what your best upgrade choices are. For example, someone running version 3.0.2 would get links to upgrade to 3.0.17, 3.2.10 and 4.0.5. Previously they would just get a mention of 3.0.3.
  • You'll be informed if you are running a major/minor version that is no longer maintained (e.g. a 3.2 version).
  • You'll get a link direct to your upgrader should there be an upgrade available (in red), as well as a popup link direct to the news post for the upgrade.

We're aware that we're fixing a lot of bugs at the moment, and as a result releasing many new patch releases. We've done all this to make upgrading as quick and smooth as possible, and so that people don't need to monitor our website carefully to keep up-to-date on what the latest versions are.

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Chris, thats Cool!!! I like it.

Fletch, do a full back up and have a go, if anything breaks just restore the backup. I have done that once before and the restore worked great for me.

I like the idea thanks. Very much like how ipb does it.
You should also add a little thing that shows topics from the staff section (topic like this) on here so we know about improvemnets, yes another thing from IPB.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

In addition to what I described in my first post, we have now made another improvement to the upgrade system.

From now on it will be possible to upgrade to the latest versions from any older versions. To make this possible the news posts that announce new versions will now have a dynamic feature that auto-generates idealised upgrade files.

If you reach the news posts via the version information of your Admin Zone, it'll automatically detect your version and generate an ideal tar file for you (a tar file no larger than it needs to be). If you access the news post directly you'll be able to specify your version to the same end.

The main advantage to this new system is that people won't need to first upgrade to each new minor release (e.g. 4.1) in order to get ongoing access to patches (e.g. 4.1.1). Great for people who want to go on holiday and find we released a million patches by the time they return :lol:.

The second advantage is the upgrade process should be stabler with the idealised tar files, for those who keep up with all the patches. The chance of the upgrader timing-out is reduced as there is less data to transfer and extract.

Our belief is that:
  • this new ability for flexible upgrading;
  • the improved upgrade process and advice (described in my first post);
  • and the various improvements we've been making to the upgrader script itself
will together make the upgrade process a lot more user-friendly.

I think we're miles ahead of other software, with our automatic server to server transfers, and our advanced integrity checker - but there may still be room for improvement. We're always open to feedback - if anyone still struggles with upgrades please let us know what problems are faced and we'll take it on-board.
