Hiya Chris! As OCP4 nears release, I'm just about ready to turn my attention to learning how to create addon's for OCP. I was wondering (and just lemme know if this is an impossible question to answer) if you had a broad definition in mind of the types of things that are best suited as a core enhancement (feature request to ocProducts) or created as an addon. There are some obvious ones (for example Google Maps integration) that would be addons I would imagine, but some of the more esoteric things (for example my post here) I'm not sure if this would be a core enhancement or an addon project. Bottom line: I want to be (somewhat) sure that I'm directing my very limited knowledge and coding skill in the right direction.

Hope this makes some sense!

Hi,

It's fantastic that you want to make addons :)!

You might want to check out this topic that a member of the community created some time ago. He did a great job of categorising addons that people wanted doing.

'Esoteric' is the perfect word to describe a large portion of what we're unlikely to put into ocPortal itself. Other stuff we're unlikely to put in:
  • Things we consider too "quirky" to put in a professional product. E.g. games. This is why ocWorld is not a part of ocPortal itself.
  • Things that are very specific to certain kinds of sites, and would be very out of place if given too much of a position in the product. For example, an ebay "Recent Bids" block.
  • Things that are partisan. Google maps is an example there, although that's borderline due to Google maps huge dominance. Maybe a better example would be blocks to integrate with LinkedIn (there being FaceBook and MySpace out there too).
  • Again with Google maps, the main reason we haven't done this though is due to our philosophy of trying to build a framework rather than go too far in trying to second-guess what people want to do. Specifically in this case, Google supply a method that is pretty much a case of copying&pasting HTML - so our strategy is just to make sure ocPortal can work with such standard approaches.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Excellent Chris, thanx, just what I was looking for.

Welp, I can't guarantee things are going to work out on the addon creation side, however, I'm gonna damn well try, so we'll see what we end up with! ;-)

Yay now its not just going to be me struggling on making add ons.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.
