I mentioned on Twitter we'd probably have a big announcement this week.

Well, that announcement is that version 4.2 is going to include the ability to run an online store :).

Key facts:
  • The store works via catalogues, meaning you can easily customise what fields are available for your products.
  • You add items to your shopping cart as you shop, then purchase the contents of your cart.
  • Payment is via one of the payment-gateways ocPortal already supported, such as PayPal, or any payment-gateway a third party programmer writes code for. Everything is built on top of ocPortal's pre-existing eCommerce system, meaning:
    • all the features such as profit & loss charts, and manual transaction processing, carry over (and also another 4.2 feature – reviews)
    • it fits very cleanly into our architecture and is very extendible by third-party programmers.
  • Customers can view their orders.
  • Administrators receive e-mail alerts when orders are purchased and can set order dispatch statuses.
  • Stock control features are included.

I should be clear that we're not trying to compete on the same terms as other eCommerce systems by trying to do everything. We feel that having a tightly integrated store that provides all the features most people need is far more important than having every feature that dedicated eCommerce software has. So, you won't be seeing gift vouchers, complex shipping and tax calculations, and customisable product configurations, at least not initially. What you will see is a well-written user-friendly store, that integrates perfectly with the rest of ocPortal (including the other eCommerce features ocPortal has had since version 3.0) and is very easy to manage. It's never been so easy to build a community where users can buy things, post on forums, and contribute content such as videos – that's the kind of out-of-the-box integration that we love to make work.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
