That's alright, there's too much for someone owing a favour to do really. If someone wants a translation for their own site then they have everything they need to do it themselves. If 50 people come along and say "We'll register if you do a translation to xyz", ocProducts will consider organising it ;).

Hi,

I'm considering to use ocportal for one of my projects and could make Russian translation in the process. I would just need few tips to decide if ocportal really will meet my requirements. I would be grateful if someone could tell me how to do or where to read about the following:
1. If I create multilingual site will it's content be separated by language? I mean will I get completely different content that (could) be translated but will not display content on other languages if there is no this content translation for them? It is related to comments as well, as most of cms I have looked at will not separate comments by language and will display all comments made to the particular page in all languages.
2. How can I set utf-8 as a default characters encoding for English pages? It is not so important if I get positive on my first question as encoding will not play a big role if it will not try to display russian comments or content for english pages in ISO encoding that will warp texts :)
3. Will translation for 4.1.6 suite 4.1.9 version? I have 4.1.9 and translation group is available for 4.1.6 as I can see.
4. Could you please tell me how many strings (approx) currently available for translation (I mean just an estimate value - like 2k or 10k strings). It is not essential but important enough as it will affect my ability to use ocportal until the translation is done.

Hi,

I'm glad you're considering doing a translation.

1) This isn't supported, although the database supports it behind-the-scenes. Covered in some more depth in the internationalisation tutorial, but basically unless you're a programmer, ocPortal doesn't support translations of content except pages.

2) Described in the internationalisation tutorial.

Hmm… am I correct that it will display pages in both languages (in my case as I am planning to provide content in English and Russian) regardless of user's language settings?
It makes things a bit difficult… Does it have language settings for content in databases? I mean it would be much simpler if I could just add a new condition to MySQL select request to select pages in appropriate language only if it is possible in terms of content storing and delivery.
Also, before I forgot it - what are preferences to user's language selection: it can be done by browser language, user profile language and direct language selection from the site front-end interface (correct me if I am wrong). It would be perfect if user profile selection would overwrite browser language and direct language selection would overwrite user's profile in the current session. Does it work in this way?

2) Described in the internationalisation tutorial.
As I read there it is advised to modify language ini files to set characters encoding. It would be quite ridiculous to modify English files just to change char encoding… But if there is no other way it can be done in general. However, if I will be able to separate content in a way described above it will not matter at all.

The rest seems quite good to me. I have tested translation on a small file and it takes me not so long to make 10-15 strings translation so I guess it should take me two weeks to month to finish all files. If I only will be able to do the thing I have described above about my first question your cms seems to fit my needs perfect as it has few essential things to the games related site which I am planning to create and I have not met such things ready-to-go in other cms yet.

Thank you very much for fast and comprehensive replies.

Someone set to use Russian would see the Russian versions, someone set to use English would see the English versions. But this is just for pages.

Yes all that.

I would advise editing English to use UTF-8. This won't override the whole file (overrides work per-string not per-file). You also won't need to convert any strings because English text doesn't need to use character sets like most languages do (i.e. it is all ASCII which works in both character sets and UTF).

Besides pages - would I be able to use different catalogs, forums and cedi pages for different language versions? I mean creating two catalogs with the same info in different languages and two forums and so on. And link them to appropriate menu versions (which are comcode pages and should allow language support). Would it work? I understand it would not prevent users to post in different languages but it is a much lesser issue.

Yes, that is a very sensible approach.

Thank you :) I will then start to translate and try to accustom with the interface meanwhile. There will be a lot of questions I guess as the whole system seems quite complicated and I am not sure I got some core ideas correctly. I'll try to ask them in turn into more appropriate forum topics.
