Back with the latest version (5.0.1) of ocPortal and, with much hair-pulling and massive help from these forums and Chris in particular, I think the site is ready for MY mass public. The site content is fairly parochial and isn't a subject that holds interest for people 'outside' the Community.

However, it IS an ocPortal driven site and that at least will interest members of the Forum. Since I've had my fair share of screw-ups reintroducing the site it may be of general interest to others who hit the same, or similar problems. All I am left with is the massive task of editing all the old 'News' posts to fit the new display!

Thanks for reading. You can find the new link in my signature.

*claps* Looks good Fletch! Well done on your theming as well!

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

Thanks mythus.

Here's a coincidence for you to ponder on.

I was forced to take a couple of my registered users to task for 'abusive' behaviour. Of course they defended themselves strongly, but I had the last word.

I vaguely remembered the description of your site in your signature, so I looked it up and then emailed them with 'ultimatums', and added that they were using MY site, and that I considered my site to be …..
set in a devastated world ruled by a tyrannical god!

Still waiting for a response to that!

Thanks Violative. Always nice to receive a positive comment.

Yes, I like that vid for several reasons, not least of all that it has a 'happy' ending despite what looked like a catastrophe in the making! The guy who shouted RUNNNNNN was probably a bit slow on the uptake. Me, I would have been running first and thinking about shouting later. Much later!

Thanks for mentioning the IE problem. I may have set the 'Guest' parameters a bit too severely (keeps the mindless-morons at bay)! I've received similar reports in the long, distant past and got it sorted, so I have hopes of rectifying this reasonably easily.

Update: 2012

A couple of years have passed. Version 5 is a dim distant memory.

NOW it is version 9 - the 'big deal' that has probably broken more designs (and hearts) than any other release. But if you want to remain with the 'cutting edge' of ocPortal, then you simply HAVE to upgrade to this bad boy.

I've eventually managed the transition, but not without massive encouragement from these forums. There are too many to name, so forgive me if I haven't included you, but there are 3 that I need to mention:
  • Chris - for constantly being there and answering the vaguest of questions from me and anybody else that has had 'problems'
  • sholzy - for 'casually' mentioning that anybody thinking of upgrading should 'remove' their modded theme, restore the default theme (for whichever version they are running), and then consider installing the upgrade
  • temp1024 - who has made most of the upgrade process possible for ALL members, by posting a tute in the Community Docs on how to clone your site

Jean, Harry, mythus, friendly, psydoc, BobS, Duck, Jason (and others - I'll add the names as I remember them), also need to take a bow for the masses of encouragement and their ideas. Thanks guys!

I think I will attempt to add something to the Community Docs on the lines of "ocPortal version 9 upgrade for Dummies" telling how I went about it. It took time and patience, but it appears I did things in the right order, and didn't screw up big-time by rushing the upgrade.

Finally, @Chris, please take a screen shot of the latest site for your Home page display if you still consider it is worth publicising.

P.S. I didn't forget. The link to the site is in my sig. You guys should all do that so that we can have easy access to your site when you have something to say, or when you've hit a brick wall and want another eyball to take a jaundiced look!

No idea why, sholzy, unless it has something to do with your local settings ('Defense Plan') …

bummer

I figured out what was the cause. I've been using namebench to find faster DNS servers. One of the IP's it gave me was 216.146.35.35, which belong to dyn.com. That particular IP provides spyware protection to its users.

Why Dyn.com is thinking your site is a spyware site is up to you to figure out. :)

Congratulations, Fletch!

I'm certain this undertaking took a lot of courage, perseverance and brute force.  You have finally broken the barrier between 'then'  and 'now',  an encouragement to many of us still juggling upgrades from previous versions.

Naaaaahhhhh! Can't be bothered.

I hate 'upstarts' (as opposed to 'start-ups') who cobble together a list, and then proceed to make other people's lives a misery!

You want to continue using them, go ahead …!!

Ooeerrrrr, I thought I was the last one to adopt the 9 upgrade!

Thought about scribbling a 'how to' for the Community Docs, but shelved the idea because it seemed it would be redundant before it even got written.

Many thanks for the kind thoughts.

Guess what. I looked it up, too, and got the same information.

But the editing of the video is so good, I think I will let it stay as an 'awesome' bit of flying!
