Moving forward with Composr

ocPortal has been relaunched as Composr CMS, which is now in beta. ocPortal 9 will be superseded by Composr 10.

Head over to compo.sr for our new site, and to our migration roadmap. Existing ocPortal member accounts have been mirrored.

Hey there ocPortal developers, supporters, fans, and users.  Greetings from Appleton, Wisconsin, USA.  I've been quietly lurking around the forums and using and learning ocPortal for a little over a year now.  With the insecurity and lack of support with the Nuke style (PostNuke, PHPNuke, etc) CMS, I set out looking for something with similar features and a similarly intuitive adminstrative interface about two years ago.  Having tried other popular CMS software like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla!, and a few others, I just couldn't find something as easy to setup and administer as the various Nuke style CMS packages I've used.  Then I found ocPortal   ocPortal has more features than I need and, more importantly, has nearly all of the features I want.

Being a tech geek with hobbies that include robotics, computers, PC repair and tech support for family and friends, and web site development, I started to rebuild my tech site.  A site that started as an online version of my computer BBS (remember what those were?) back in the mid 1990's is now renamed and more of a tech blog and news site.  The site is now running ocPortal v9 beta 2 in very basic setup with a couple of ocPortal addons and no other under-the-hood changes.  The site is called Tech Fusion online and can be seen at http://www.tfo.net.

Another recent venture I've got going is helping my niece (Holley) set up a web show called The H-Factor and doing comedy videos for YouTube.  This site is currently running ocPortal v8.1.2 in a very basic setup with a few ocPortal addons and a couple of changes to the theme to accomodate the flash (I know, yuk, flash is bad!) animation in the header.  The site is called Holleywood Studio and can be seen at http://www.holleywoodstudio.com.

For the Holleywood Studio site, I plan on going back over the blocks/modules/miniblocks/minimodules developer documentation and looking at Google's YouTube API to see if I can automatically incorporate our YouTube channel content into our web site using some type of template.  Right now, the videos on our Holleywood Studio main page are being updated manually after we upload videos to YouTube and it would be much nicer if this could happen automatically.  And the H-Factor zone main page uses a YouTube embedded playlist which I find is not very intuitive or useful for organizing our content.  Again, I'd like to use the power of ocPortal and the YouTube API to generate this content for us automatically.

Well, that's all I have for now.  If anybody has any questions, I'd be glad to answer what I can.

Thanks to the power of OCPortal framework and excellent documentation, I was able to put together a YouTube Channel Integration Block.  The block is uploaded (awaiting validation) to the Addons/3rd Party Integration for OCPortal 8.0 and should also work with 9.0 (but not tested yet).  You can see the block in action at the following pages:

I'll fix any bugs I've missed and then create another block to integrate YouTube searches.

Thanks for sharing Jason, that should come in very handy for me  .

I've been wanting to do something similar for ages, but just never could seem to find the time. I've got a "latest videos" zone that I threw together quickly just so that I could have something showing the latest videos out of our youtube channel.

Your block definitely looks cleaner. If/when I use it I'll probably tweak it slightly to make it flash-blocker friendly like the rest of the youtube videos on my site.

Do you have a Samsung Galaxy S / Galaxy S II ? If so, why not check out my ScreenFree FM Radio .

Thanks for sharing this very useful addon, Jason!
It is brilliant and will serve me well on my tutoring website.
I've tested it with v9 beta3 and it is working just fine.

Great introduction to your two ocPortal websites, by the way!

Cheers,
Jean

Thanks for the comments guys.  I've started a new thread for the YouTube Channel Integration Block where I'll post updates, take bug reports, take suggestions, and provide some documentation for the templates:

EDIT: The topic link above has somehow been lost from the forum.  I'll try to get a new topic started at some point.
