This is my electronic portfolio. I had originally done it in plain html, but uploading and such was a hassle. I decided to go with ocPortal because of the easy theme changing opportunities and I could upload stuff much easier.

Close to a year later and now a new design.

I was previously on 4.2.2 or something like and when I went to upgrade to 5.0.1, I got errors galore.

During my college years, in my portfolio class, we were required to design and create business cards and hand those out at the portfolio show. I still have quite a bit left, so I decided to base my website design around that this time.

It is pretty snazzy, Eric. Clean and to the point. Relevant graphics on the page. Can't ask for much more!

Left a comment on your portfolio. Please trash if it isn't the right moment for it …

Can't offer any clue as to the display of the second gallery, BTW. Sorry!

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

lol Fletch… your comment is almost like it's unfinished. It's okay to reply to the blog with your own opinions… good or bad. I just ask it's constructive.

And thank you both.

Here's a sample of my business card:

So...

I'm kinda scared to attempt to upgrade this. I haven't done anything to this site in awhile and I do have some new works to add to my portfolio.

The site runs fine as is, but the ocPortal version is way outdated. It's so old it's v5.0.1

I have a couple options in mind:
  1. Don't attempt to upgrade it and continue to use what I have. Don't fix what's not broken attitude.
  2. Upgrade it slowly and either:
    • Be successful
    • Lose everything
I guess this is more aimed at the ocStaff, but what would be recommended?

I have backed up all my graphics already. And obviously my portfolio work is backed up. I can also copy/paste my text and blog into new documents as a backup. I have a database backup too. But that would be obsolete if I upgraded and something went wrong... unless I reinstall same version I assume.

I would first try using the merge importer to import into a new site.

It's possible that the upgrader may let you do the full jump, but this one's definitely not tested, so I only have 20% confidence ;).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

And you can always clone your site and test the upgrades on the clone first.

Eric,

9.x.x was designed to catch out the unwary (joking), but it is a major departure and will probably cause you grief if you don't take heed of Chris' 'warning', and you should NOT ignore temp's advice.

You've probably already seen it, but if you haven't, temp has produced How to clone your ocPortal site - ocPortal.com, and I think it has become the de facto go-to tute before attempting anything on a live site!
