Themes 201: brand-new themes

We have launched a new video tutorial, themes 201. This tutorial is easily our longest so far, and steps through the process of implementing an entirely new design in ocPortal.

» Watch tutorial

With this tutorial we have released a new minimal theme called "ocPortal reset", which makes it easier to implement new themes. This theme is used in the tutorial as a base, and is available from the "import addon" screen inside ocPortal.

The tutorial doesn't try to teach XHTML or CSS, but instead how to take prebuilt XHTML and CSS and put it into ocPortal. Many will want to study the code Allen wrote to make the original standalone design work:

Hallowed customer

Allen,

A foxy Geography teacher (I was totally in love with her - doesn't apply here!) once marked me 21/20 on an assignment, with the added comment "I would not presume to comment on such excellence!"

I've always treasured it, but I think it is time to hand it on.

It's all yours …

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Allen,
Once again, this video is totally awesome !!

This is a wonderful way to showcase the significance of Zones in oc.Portal and demonstrate how, with a few "near-easy" processes it is possible to extend an existing website with creative and artistic material without losing what makes oc.Portal so great: A seamless integration of Contents.
Many thanks for the great tutorial.

Hey Allen,

Just want to add my thanks for this video. Even tho I am themeing 4.2, this helps a lot. Some of the coding is different but I know what to look for.

Thank you for this very helpful tutorial. It gave me kick start on modifying my site and it was easy to follow what to do and what to edit.

I had some troubles on watching it first, but when i downloaded and used VLC, no problems.

Hi, Chris!   :)  Where can I possibly download the item? I haven't any available from my import screen, you see…

This theme has not been maintained, but it is in our addon directory under an older version and it is possible it may still work.

O'k I see, there's probably to be a reason for that. I was going to imlement a jQuery slider design on my site, something simmilar to what you have on your Home page. What would you advise me as the required steps to take in this case?

Sorry, I can't step through themeing questions outside commercial support.

I have uploaded an updated ocp_reset theme for v6. We'll now try and maintain it for future versions.

Using something like jQuery in ocPortal is no different really to using it anywhere else. ocPortal templates and CSS incorporate all the normal web technology. However we have a designer themes tutorial that addresses any particular issues a designer needs to be aware of.

Thank's. :hippie: I mistakenly wrote 'missing tutorial' instead of 'missing reset theme' in previous post. I thougt if that lo loger supported there's no point to look for that in older version having in mind my current task. But if you say the reset theme is still relevant I'll be interested to have a look. So where do I get the one? Is it already available?

It is now where you didn't find it before.

The reset theme is just one approach, the one in this particular tutorial. There are various approaches discussed in various tutorials (reset theme, theme wizard, stripping down the default theme yourself, making changes gradually in situe, possibly others).

Hey! That was a really great tutorial! But one problem I'm having is with the url. So I named the new them 'test', my site's url has now become localhost/ocportal/test how do I make it my default? So when people go to localhost/ocportal they will see my new template?

Thanks!
