Why I am choosing OCPortal

Hello fellow USERS!

I began programming in 1980 and left a wake of computer widows in my past.

I attended Colleges and Universities full time for about a decade and feel I didn't learn anything, if I were to do it all over again the only college in the US I would consider would be St. John's College.

My current obsession in the creation on a Virtual University, using the Online Learning Community model and guided discussions to teach a Great Books Program using Public Domain literature available from Project Gutenberg heavily hypertext linked (as this article is) to Wikimedia (Wikimedia Foundation Projects) as a reliable source for clarification of often less known concepts in today's world that were common place in "days of old".

I have been using "pro-moodle" which is a bridged version of Joomla and Moodle that allows the two systems to share a common log-in. This configuration works, has a large user community, is easy to administer and is much easier to skin than OCPortal, however since most functions are add-ons there is inevitable compatibility issues, and little "global sharing" (as in the points function of OCPortal).

In OCPortal I see most of the functionality I need to implement the Online Learning Community model in the main install bypassing module incompatibilities and sharing actions across the entire system. As an added bonus I see in OCWorld my ability to implement a "Second Life" type of environment for student interaction and reinforcement of learning objectives (imaging the troll penalizing students for getting lecture questions wrong).

I thought I was fairly good with this stuff since I have been using css for 10 years, html for 15, php for 8 years, pearl for x, and so on, but when I see 2700+ line css files I didn't write (these are much better organized and documented than I write) I really can't find anything…

Anyway, like the program, love the professionalism of the code (well actually professionals are normally much sloppier), but I have a large learning curve ahead of me, and that is why I am here…

:offtopic:Well, if anyone is without an unpaid project let me know…:offtopic:

Well-settled

Welcome. I am sure you will learn to love OCportal completely. Not only for what it does but the support here is the best I have seen among any CMS, Forum or blog software.

Welcome to the site.
Whats an unpaid project?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

:o An Unpaid Project is where I talk you into doing things for free, it ends up saving me money (I don't have) and you get experience that could be totally useless in the real world. But on the shiny side it is something to put in your portfolio (but only if my site is successful and you actually did something you feel like bragging about).

Ah I do those types of projects a lot with helping people create a website, some people do pay me though. So pretty much some thing I do all the time specially for friends.

Oh and the reason I asked cuz 2 translations came to mine when I read unpaid projects.
1. Projects we are going to have Chris make, you would help us pay for.
2. can not remember what the second one was but I think it was along the same lines as the first one.
