Been there, dun it, got the T-shirt …

Took a break from ocPortal, for many reasons, not least of all being that I had over 800 registered users and only had 5 who visited regularly. How NAF is that?

The other reason for a temporary defection from ocP was that I was running a fully functional site using version 3.x.x, but times had moved on and the version 4.x.x. updates were being rolled out at a phenomenal rate. And I didn't have the heart to re-build my website. So I went looking for something else!

Tried several alternatives, but none of them were able to give me 'precisely' what I had on my ocP site. Sure, some of them could be adapted with a little tweak here, a little hack there, but it soon became apparent that when you've driven a Rolls Royce for a few years you become easily disenchanted with the CitroŽn deux-chevaux you find yourself manoeuvring across the world wide web!

So I'm back to rebuilding the site with the latest version of ocPortal. It is still closed to visitors, so no link will be posted, but as soon as I get all my little duckies lined up I will invite you to come shoot them down!

Be Happy.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

Glad to see you back in the ocPortal community, Fletch.

I've seen others who left and switched but their site could have been easily done via ocPortal as well along with some other tweaks. I did enjoy visiting your site and look forward to the day it's fully resurrected.

The site Anglo-Indian Portal is now open, and you are kindly invited to view at your leisure. Please don't forget to pay at the turnstiles BEFORE you start throwing missiles at my 'duckies'!

Some bullet point decisions that other's might find of use. I only give my choices; I don't recommend anything:
  • - Fixed or elastic? - Chose fixed because too many elastic sites stretch the content and design more than the designer intended, resulting in a crappy display. Bring back the clunky square CRTs I say; at least you knew what your end user display was going to be!
  • - Light or dark? - Hmmmm… After much procastination I settled for a dark theme. Had I known how much work was involved in 'customising' the CSS properties for a dark theme before I made my decision, I would probably have stuck with 'light'.
  • - Default or User theme for Admin and CMS? - 'User'. It confused my tiny mind less. Suddenly switching from a dark theme to a light one kinda threw me on occasions!
  • - ocP navigation and Zones or start from scratch? - The reason I fell in love with ocP was the fact that everything integrated seamlessly straight out of the box. So why change it? Hence, anybody that has had anything to do with ocPortal will recognize the site as such. But I've tried to add a few twists to the overall display. I'm sure I haven't finished tweaking, but the end result satisfies me for the moment.
  • - Fresh build or Import old site? - Here again, I was a bit ambivalent. Started out to rebuild the site from scratch and thoroughly enjoyed doing so. Then, looking at what I'd done it occurred to me that it was VERY similar to the old site (subconscious, or what?), so I thought about importing the data from the old site. Be warned! It isn't something to be undertaken lightly. Especially when the 'merge' is between two different versions! Ultimately the import/merge was a success, but not before getting major help from Chris. I apparently found a bug in the import module, so count that as my contribution to the ocPortal build!
So, was it worth it? Sure, or I wouldn't be sitting here making this post.

Whether my miniscule number of users will appreciate it is something else, but don't we all do this sort of thing hoping for the best, huh?

Be Happy!

Thanks Jean. Apart from the 'editing' of (old) URLs and finding where to edit the 'MAIL' properties for the different types of email (MAIL.tpl is a catch-all - fixes one, breaks another), all that will be left to do is to follow your detailed instructions on trying to get the page background display to show on IE. Doesn't look like version 9 is going to be ready any time soon!

Thanks SAC.

Still a lot of work to be done. Working on the PSD files for the buttons. Still trying to 'blend' and 'contrast', but as you know from working on a dark theme, not everything is as simple as it appears at first.

One 'safe' thing I fall back on is to zap text with FFFFFF so that I can see it, and then start working on various shades to see what will 'fly'.

Race you to the finish …

Well-settled

Hehehe… I'm giving mine the final touch as we speak… I'm quite happy with the results, although it remains to be seen when people start to become actively involved… But at the moment I'm doing the same as you… working on my buttons to reflect the basic design…

Whenever working with colors, whether its backgrounds, fonts, or buttons, I usually take a screenshot of the site, and then play around with colors in a paint program before applying to the site itself…

Well, good luck with the remaining work! And you did inspire me to take back the news avatars - although my own custom stuff…
