Hi Violative, welcome aboard.

ocP is certainly feature-RICH, but you will need to start thinking 'laterally', because the 'features' you so rightly identify are pretty tightly locked in to each other.

For example: you ask about changing your background image. This can be done easily in the CSS, but you seem to have been specific about only changing your front page and forum.

Can you clarify that those are the only two you want to change?

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

My apologies, I did not clarify the background image issues I want to implement, the thinking is that for every new page added have the ability to add a background image if this is not currently viable can you help me locate where the code should be added to included the image where it will post on every page.

Like I have mentioned I am very very new to OCportal maybe what I want is not what can be done. Maybe an option like this can be added if it's not already.

P.S

Thank you for the warm welcome

You could use this in the CSS
#page_running_NAME_OF_YOUR_PAGE
Then add you style coding for the background image something like this
#page_running_NAME_OF_YOUR_PAGE {
background-image: url("{$IMG,BACKGROUND_IMAGE_NAME}");
background-repeat: repeat-x;
}
Just remember not to add the .jpg or .png where you add the "BACKGROUND_IMAGE_NAME"

Yes if you mean that I deleted all of my PHP content and just went ahead and install ocPortal
Then I did go all head in first.
P.S
Google cache still has the PHPBB3 site don't know for how long for, but Thanks for the welcome and many thanks for the background code. So that I really understand I should not add the extension of the image file? I will find this out soon
Thanks for making me feel received and welcomed

Wait wait now that I think about it I know nothing of ocPortal, where is the CSS file that controls this?

You also might take a look at the tutorials in the Themeing section of this FORUM. Like the "Basic Theme Modifications" - Part 1, 2, 3 by Islander-aua

ADMIN ZONE > STYLE > MANAGE THEMES > YOUR THEMES > EDIT CSS > GLOBAL.CSS

Start at Global.CSS. You may have to go to one of the other CSS files for some pages (later). The Global file controls a lot of ocPortal so it a good place to start with.

Yes with ocPortal - the way it is designed is to be very 'self contained'. Don't need much more most of the time …still, I find it helpful at times to keep my FTP within arms reach!

Hi 'Violative'!

Welcome to ocPortal!

I agree that it is very tempting and fun to plunge head first and start to modify your theme immediately, but reading some of the themeing tutorials, viewing the informative videos and going through the documentation will save you time and frustration.

Have fun!:cool:

Yes, I also agree, but IDK some people like to view forums for the bits of information they are looking for, as well as reading a tutorial, tutorials are all good, but I think we can agree that not everything can be covered their most questions come from the lack of proper samples.
It can be like almost copy and paste but the user has to tailor to what the user wants to do.
Like I see it leaving information out even if it's unintended or otherwise an error and hoping to have the user ask questions is not the proper way to gather a strong following. You can see from other popular CMS that newbie question lead to this strong following.
But anyways I am ready to learn ocPortal
With the help of kind people here, I am not asking for someone to do my site but I will need lots of help when I run into something I don't understand.
I really don't know what I am trying to say but
I maybe unsmart about site codes, but I can see something that is awesome! ocPortal.

When I first found out about ocPortal thru googling "best CMS"I went straight to the forums section here and read some threads, I was over taking with fear because of the feelingthat some users were seemly reinforcingyou're on your own here READ THE TUTORIALS .

We have to understand that when more people take notice of ocPortal not all of them are going to be professionals, and they will either use ocPortal and continue to use it with the help of the whole community or uninstall it and use something else.

My apologies I don't know what's come over me.

Greetings and welcome!

Hmm… I am not sure if you are upset at being told about the tutorials or what…  hard to tell in your post I am afraid, however I have to mention that I have yet to find as helpful off a community as the one at ocPortal.

Now sometimes it does take posting your question in the right forum, but typically when you do you will receive some help, even sometimes from the developers.

For example, posting about theming questions such as background images (which is in global_middle and such in the global.css), would best go in the forum dealing with themes. In that forum there are also some well done tutorials posted with screen shots and everything.

There is never anything wrong with asking questions. The worst question is the one never asked after all. It just helps to ask them in the right place, to be patient, and  to be willing to meet half-way and do some finger-work.

Indeed :). I often answer very tersely with minimum info just due to be being busy, but that doesn't mean someone else won't come in with more detail, or you can ask for more detail if you need it.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

You could use this in the CSS
#page_running_NAME_OF_YOUR_PAGE
Then add you style coding for the background image something like this
#page_running_NAME_OF_YOUR_PAGE {
background-image: url("{$IMG,BACKGROUND_IMAGE_NAME}");
background-repeat: repeat-x;
}
Just remember not to add the .jpg or .png where you add the "BACKGROUND_IMAGE_NAME"

I did not start themeing questions here, they just looked at my question in the themes forum, I was surprised they said anything about it here, I just went with it.
Yes I am still upset if you don't understand why anyone would be, try some role playing with someone and use the forums as the script.
You may see why I am upset.

Anyways I am into ocPortal all the way, I will read just about everything most all forums and tutorial, but I still think "not everything is explained" & some responses are making me mad.

Maybe I got a chip on my shoulders IDK

Everyone, leave it alone.

I am just happy to be here.

Greetings,

1.) I am sorry to be such a pest but I do not see your question anywhere in the Themeing forum. Instead I see it in the General: Post Your Site forum, which is where people go to post a link to their site for others to look at, greatly reducing any help you would likely get with your question.

It is odd that people thought to answer that question in this forum but I likely assume it is to be friendly and helpful. They all gave you good pointers and tried to direct you to the Themeing forum, where you would find a wonderful series of tutorials, similar questions asked by members, (including myself) and be able to ask the question to get better response.

2.) Sorry, I maybe thick headed, but I am trying to help you here. I even told you right where to go and change your background image (global_middle in the global.css). I do rp using the forums, and in fact my site, which is running ocPortal, using OCF, is a rp site where we do such. However, it doesn't help me to know why you are upset. I can only assume that you are upset because you hate being pointed to a tutorial, being given ideas on how to solve your problem, and such.. despite not having asked your question in the appropriate forum.

So again, I must insist one last time that you kindly take a look at the Themeing forum, and all that is in it if you have not already. If you are still having trouble with theming to please post your questions there and with anything else to post your questions in Deploying. I do hope that you continue to enjoy ocPortal, as it is a fascinating piece of software, and with the appropriate use of the forums you should be able to get world class support.
