Hey members of this forum, Im McStarken and yesterday i found out about ocPortal on Hotscripts.com, and honestly, i havent read so much since i read the Halo novels and really enjoyed the written material

Thing is, after spending over 3 months looking for something to spice up my website and make my community members happy, ive never been soo happy and amazed by what ive read.

What have i read? Well, ive read a lot about ocPortal, downloaded the quick installer (wich is cool)  and im just waiting for my website co-owners approval to install it and start having fun and making my site better.

So, yea. Im gonna install this baby on my server soon and hang out on these forums and have a good time ;)

Well, from what ive done with the portal itself and what ive done on these forums i have to say: " ocPortal is great !"

Unfortunatly, my server's real owner didnt like the ideas  what i wanted to do with ocPortal, so i had to uninstall it  :'(

Thing is, at my site we've changed forum software like 4 times in less than a year loosing almost everything. So, when i said i wanted to change from IPB to ocForum my "boss" freaked out !

So yea, sorry guys, i had soo many plans in my head, and all were thrown away by someone who doesnt really appreciate what im trying to do :(

I LOVE OCPORTAL !!!! I ALWAYS WILL !!

Sorry to hear that. Perhaps you can't answer this, but if I may ask, do you know if you can articulate the problems your boss had with ocPortal? I.E., is there something we can do, or should know?

Thanks again for the positive feedback, regardless. :)

Well, there wasnt no problems with ocPortal at all, is just that my friend (co-owner and "boss" xD) didnt wanted to emigrate from IPB to ocForum cuz we've already been thru 3 different forums since we got our forums. And, in order to get ocPortal working perfectly as a community based website, you really need those forums.

^^ That sounds kinda weird, so heres what really happened:

When i installed ocP first time i imported IPB 2.1.7 stuff while installing. When i was setting everything up i found out that ocF Membergroups were IPB Permission Masks, and that wasnt good because there were several IPB membergroups based on single permission masks.

Thats not all, For some reason, when i chose to use IPB forums (on install), comment feature wouldnt work well on ocPortal. For example, on user galleries i couldnt post comments cuz ocForum wasnt installed (weird, cuz i installed it)

These and other "issues" can be solved by setting up some stuff, im sure of that. But the main reason was that my "boss" didnt wanted to use some cool features, and those features were necessary to fulfill my plans for the website.

So, when i figured out that i wouldnt be able to use ocPortal at 100%, i decided to uninstall, all because i couldnt use OCF, chat, blog, IM, points system and galleries.

SO yea, cant use ocPortal, an awesome community application, to create a non-community website, sorry guys :(

That was my main goal, create a web community like others have done over the years.

Hi,

Thanks very much for taking the time to leave feedback - it really helps us.

I'll just mention, the comments problem you encountered should be pretty trivial to fix, because it's designed to integrate, and does, for the most part.

From what I understand, you're currently just using a forum, correct? If that's the case, it should be very possible to install ocPortal in a subdirectory so that it is essentially hidden since your boss isn't sure he wants it yet. But what that allows you to do is still have a functioning website that you can develop and invisibly integrate into IPB, in the event you are able to construct a website which convinces him that it's beneficial. There should be no side-effects to doing so, and if you decide you don't want it, it's completely invisible and there's no harm done.

Sorry if that sounds like a blatant sales pitch, but I just want to give you a hand if possible.

Thanks for giving us a shot :).

Well-settled

Hey McStarken,

Welcome, belatedly, to the community.  IMHO, ocPortal is the most powerful CMS system available out there until you get into the multi-thousand $ mega-corporate systems, and even then I'm not sure how much more you get (although I'd hope it was something for all those $s  ;)  ).  So I can appreciate your enthusiasm for the script.  I'd concur with Allen in that perhaps your best course of action would be to slowly win over your friend/boss by developing your ocPortal site on the side and as an addition to the IPB site.  After all, IPB is a very nice forum on its own and, once its integrated with ocPortal, it'll be like one product anyway.

Then again, that's just my $.02….  welcome!

Well, thanks for that late welcome, its really apreciated. And yea, that friend/boss prefers something simpler, wich sucks, so ill have to code the whole thing. But, the thing is, ocPortal will be running on a site of mine soon. Im thinking of starting my own GFX site, even tho i kinda own one already, but still, whenever i get my own website ill use ocPorta, cuaz ive already tried other CMS, and truly, ocP is just awesome, so yea, i might work on Spanish Translation when i get out of school wich is in 2 or 3 weeks, so yea, ocP PWNS !

It is a great system and I have switched software more times then you did. I am glad I own the site.
I started with xoops it looked primitive and was hard to use. Then I used dragonfly cms for a short while but can not really count that as the site was not live while I was testing out different software but I mentioend it as it was on I tested and thought about the longest while testing at the time.
I then got pc nuke  was not very good and also hard to use but based off the same code as dragonfly cms.
Then I went to what I used for another site which was ipb. I wanted a portal with it so at first I used mkportal it did not do what I wanted so I then used both mkportal and ocportal. I droped mkportal as ocportal was better and at one time while I waited for ocportal 3 to come out I did not have any portal. after 3 came out I started using it again and am still using it today and it made my site 10 times more popular then with out it. I even had members come back.
So you could technically use both ocPortal and ipb like I do.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Very, very nice surprise

Hello,

Just visited the site, and saw sthing that will just make my weekend.
1/ What I saw was in french  :P
2/ Obviously, language packs for 2.6 work fine on 3.x
3/ Most of it is OK, translating what's left won't take very long.

YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should have some text pages burried somewhere around the den (rules, and other things), can dig them out if somebody needs them.

As always, the structure of language files hasn't changed, but there are several new language strings in version 3 that weren't present in version 2. Apart from that, only a few minor changes (typographical rather than definition ones) have been made to existing language strings. :)

Yep…
But when V3 was released, I went to the demo site to have a look. Browser language detection was on and what i saw there was so bad I wrote to Chris to suggest he killed browser detec. (all new strings were replace by a long string of code, saying it had changed etc. Was a real mess to look at.).
What I saw on McStarken's site is just perfect.  :P

We ran the 2.6 language packs through a convertor, and all the strings which haven't changed are used in version 3. :)
