From The Netherlands

Hello,

My nickname is Kartoffels - kinda odd, I'll explain that another time.
I am 19 year old Company Economics Bachelor student at the Hanze University; perhaps I'll be doing a semester in America next year.
And I have always been intersted in community building on the Internet. In 2003 I begun programming with PHP and JavaScript, basically because I was bored at that moment. :P
In the period between 2003 and 2006 I have worked on several mentionable community projects (i.e. AMPfusion.com, MustyWindows.com, ScriptSyndicate.org, PureReaction.com and Zendra.net (former nickname). (custom made forums, portals, etc.). Due that period I've build up some experience with programming and I've always worked with the same two persons on the sites I've mentioned - unfortunally these websites are no longer online, but you can find them via WebArchive.org.
I was an active member of Newgrounds.com and have moderated a large community for a long time - which was a nice experience.

While getting bad grades I needed to make a decision and putting my hobby on a low level of expertise. So I have not been programming or contributing to any website for a really long time, let's say 2 years?
I have always been interested in community building, so that's why I looked up for some opensource CMS'. I came to this one, a fairly unknown opensource project, which seems extremely interesting.

You might see me from time to time lurking/posting, I want to pickup programming as a hobby again, I guess… and this seems very promosing and worth investing my time in.

That was my introduction. :)

Best regards,

Kartoffels

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Welcome to OCP.

EDIT: that reminded me of the company in robo cop so should reword that.

Welcome to ocportal.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Welcome.

I suppose if you were Irish, your nickname would be 'Spud'?

Just a wild guess …

LOL!

Not clever at all, but I have a fascination with 'nicknames' from way back during my working days in the military.

For instance, nearly every guy with the surname of 'Ward' in the Royal Navy is nicknamed 'Sharky'. I've yet to crack that code, but it makes me chuckle.

Another one that is self-explanatory is with the surname 'White'; always nicknamed 'Chalky'.

And there are many more, but you get the idea!

I am sure you will explain why, Amy … in time.

No pressure!
