Don't be scared, as someone who knew nothing about cms 3months ago, i have found ocPortal by far the easiest to learn and it's nice to have all the features ( even if you dont need them all right away they are there for when you do) Also, from what I have seen so far on these forums there is allot of very friendly, knowledgeable people here willing to help. I guess it all comes down to personal preference and what works best for each individual. Cheers! Tisnart |

Totally agreed. I have finished read through all ocportal out of the box features few hours ago Does anyone has a good suggestion of hosting company for ocportal? I have been using eapps.com for my job tasks. It is good on cpu and ram offering, but the storage size and total bandwidth is expensive. I need cpu and ram part of eapps.com and I love unmetered storage size and total bandwidth :p By the way, I am from a city called Miri from within Malaysia inside state of Sarawak |

That's a good one! And Welcome to you Adam!
If anyone spends sometime in these forums, it should dispel that theory about scaring away people. Although, it might be possible for some to see strange brain-dead monsters lurking away in the halls of the forums late during the night and hear faint echoes of howling about opportunities lost. |

(queue the sound of chains rattling) Jean, are you referring to us in PST who are online here after you all have gone to bed? …H-o-w-w-w-e-e-e-e-l-l-l-l-l… Although I have heard the question as to whether Chris ever sleeps… but then, of all of us, it couldn't be him since he is obviously not brain dead.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Absolutely Not! Being from Down Under (our perspective) you have guardianship whilst we sleep. I referred to the ghosts of lost opportunities. From Thomas Wolfe's "O Lost, and by the wind grieved, ghost, come back again."
I have been with Elief.com (recommended host by ocPortal) for the past 3 years and I can tell you that they have always strived to improve their reliability and the performance of their servers. A few faulty hardware plagues later brought them to running the latest generation of Intel processors on some really fast 15k Cheetah drives with a noticeable performance increase. I don’t know if this performance boost is related to their introduction of a form of cloud hosting, which basically is suppose to isolate each account on the server preventing abusive or heavy usage sites from affecting the entire server. Presently, I am really pleased with the results. Oh, and their service tickets response has always been outstanding with near real time exchanges of advices and solutions findings. They might look a bit pricier and do not offer unmetered storage size and bandwidth, and that might be the reason for better performance than those who parade unlimited everything with no real intention of allowing it for long (it's just a tease). During that period I have also used a large California Host (Lunarpages.com) with unlimited everything for $9/month and experienced lightning speed on their server until my community reached around 15 simultaneous logins a day. My site was slammed with a speed bump effectively reducing everything to a crawl with no change in sight after repeated protest. Cheers! Jean |

ocPortal may seem scary at first, as there is indeed a lot of stuff in it, but isn't that the case when you want to make a good website? I have actually found others such as Joomla and Drupal scarier lol. As for unlimited bandwidth and storage space… just remember this… The cake is a lie….

Thanks for the great comments Jean, it's been a pleasure having you as a customer We actually have just partnered up with CloudFlare as well, which can make your sites load up to 30% faster than they already are(along with a bunch of cool additional security features and DDoS protection)! We will be sending out an email about this within the next couple of weeks with full details. It's already enabled in your cPanel control panel, and it's pretty easy to get setup, if you would like to give it a try(If you have an SSL certificate, you'll need a pro account with CloudFlare for SSL to work properly).
Welcome to the forum and ocPortal, Adam! We've found that, even though we offer a smaller amount of resources, most customers still only use a fraction of them, even when they originally anticipated to use much more. Unlimited hosting is generally a lie and that type of hosting will limit you in other ways that effect your website. If you'd like to give us a try, we do have a 60 day money back guarantee. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us an email at sales[at]elief.com |

I have not been with Elief as long as Jean but it has been over a year now and I can second the words about Elief's quality and the good people working there to keep your hosting experience a great one and your site online and available to the world. I would not hesitate for a second to tell you to take Richard Rowan's invitation to try Elief's hosting a try. You will like it. Oh you have 500 gig space but there is a 20 000 file limit. Well 4 - 5 installations of OCportal will use that up in no time! Thats not counting hosting any download and photos etc! Unlimited Database but oh wait in the fine print somewhere (that I am sure wasn't there when I signed up) it says there is a limit of 3000 tables but because we sent emails to the wrong adreess warning you that you were over your limit you now have to drop enough DB's to make it reach the 1000 table limit. Sorry about your luck nothing else we can do and your website stays offline and disabled till you do that. So be forewarned nothing is as free is as it looks. I knew that going in but also my sites weren't really generating quite enough resource nusances to warrant pestering at the point they were. I fully expect one day as my sites traffic grow I have to invest more in my server up to one day hopefully fully dedicated. But starting our yeah take something cheap just don't believe it will sustain you long especially if you expect your site to grow and get busy and plan to move to something more expensive early than expected if you want to minimize outages or problems. |

Hi Adam, For CPU we allow you to use up to 1 core on our servers (currently dual E5620 processors), and up to 1GB memory. If you hit any of these limits, instead of suspending your site like many hosts do, our new cloud based software will simply slow down the requests to your site a bit until your usage returns to normal. This allows you to keep your site online at all times, without affecting other users on the server. |

Ever since I start using ocPortal a couple weeks ago, I've been running into non-stop 500 errors while working on/using my database-intensive lookup pages. For a while I was getting a "Too many MySQL connections" error from the web host…turns out the site is only allowed 25 simultaneous connections. ocPortal, with more than a couple people on the site, easily peaks that out with caching to the database. Caching to the file system fixed that issue, but I still run into issues where I get shut down briefly if I have a poorly written query, or one that runs really long. I've paid for a year with them, 2 months ago, so I'm loathe to switch so quickly, but I may find myself doing so soon. From the looks of things, eLief's Advanced plan seems pretty much what I need (now that I'm a little more aware of just how much traffic I use per month and how much disk space I need). |
