Fan in training

In another life I am a senior systems integrator/network architect and programmer. But since the downturn in the economy here in the US, I've found myself doing more "web work" for smaller companies who don't need VPNs, Firewalls, fiber optic backhauls, large APIs like eBay or mainframe connectivity. I don't really have the time to build a site from scratch using a PHP/Python/Rails framework and then bill these guys tons of money so I always look for alternatives for the projects I am working on whether it be Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. I can totally relate to having "cobbled together" a project just to get it to work and it's largely a huge pain to maintain.

I recently found OCP on a research request for a niche link directory and I must say that after working with it, for less than two days, it can handle a majority of what I do on practically any ecommerce/CMS site that I build out for customers and projects. To say that I am impressed is an understatement. I'm still looking for the "catch". I already have 3 larger sized projects that can use OCP goodness immediately.

You guys just "get it". Thank you!

Ok back to studying documents and wiki.

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
