Greetings to the Members of this Community, and a very special thank you to the developers of ocPortal

Greetings to the Members of this Community, and a very special thank you to the developers of ocPortal.

I am a Computer Technology teacher involved with a Worker's Retraining Program to train computer technicians in a developing country. I'm about to launch a project which will create over 70 ocPortal web sites for my students in the next few days, hoping to develop their interest and skills in using such a tool, which in turn could give them an edge with future employments.

I was impressed from day one, as soon as I connected to this site and visited its pages. I have been using Joomla with several add-ons for a few years and was looking for an integrated product, which would look professional and offered many features that did not need to be reinstalled after each critical updates of the software.

I felt sure that my search was over after an initial test and decided to install it and start porting some of the contents of my other site to it. For most parts, everything went fine because of the well illustrated and clearly structured documentation and tutorials. I must say that I have found a unique mark of quality permeating throughout your body of work, which adds a sense of satisfaction and delight while discovering features after features, which for most parts are easy to implement.

After spending hundreds of hours from early mornings to middle of the nights during the past three weeks, it is not as rosy-rosy as I would like it to be, and I attribute this to my noobiness with this software which is taking a bit of getting used to. However, I am baffled by the fact that most of my problems seem to have never been raised by members in the help forums, according to my searches. I am not the type of person who goes about asking for help before a thorough search for some kind of data, even if it is approximate, which could be investigated and tested. This makes me feel that my questions must be absurd, or illogical. I want my project to succeed and have the refinement of this very site and the many fine examples brought forth by this community, so I will sit on my pride and ask for help on the appropriate forums.

I'm looking forward to a long association with this community, and in time, add my contributions for its continued success.

Hi Islander-aua, welcome aboard!! Just a quick note: please do not ever feel your questions are silly or absurd here at OCP. The developers and community here are very friendly and eager to help out where we can. We (the community) were all noobs once (and we're all still learning as well)! ;-)

Hi Islander-aua,

I've written a bit in your most recent topic, but I did want to add one thing. We'd be very grateful if you could keep a list of any usability issues you or your students find during the project and pass it back to us :). We're always looking to improve the quality yet further, and this is a good opportunity to collate feedback.

Become a fan of ocPortal on Facebook or add me as a friend. Add me on on Twitter.
Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.
