A brief intro . . .

Hi, I go by the nick of 'Fletch', but my name is Terry.

I decided that it was about time I entered something here, especially since I lurk in the background for hours reading about what peeps can and cannot do with this package. I've had my "ups 'n' downs", just like everybody else. Three things have conspired to make life a lot more challenging; some of the bugs in the software, my web hosts and their OTT Server settings, and my own ineptitude. Sometimes one, sometimes two, and often all three have led to me ripping out what is left of a sparsely populated scalp!

The comments I see on these Fora appear to be par for the course. Most users seem to want the package to work for them straight out of the box (not an unexpected aspiration) as most of us have had experience using other CMS packages. However, the thing that appealed to me about this software was that primarily it was 'secure' with 'standards-compliance' being a very close second. The more I use it, the more it surprises me, because there is functionality included that I never dreamed would come bundled as part of ANY package. I am still discovering hidden gems, and if users like Ami (or Amy, the strange American girl) can continue punching above her weight, this Community should be able to exchange enough good ideas to alleviate the problems some people have setting things up. "Thinking Laterally" just has to be the buzz-word (or should that be plural - words?).

Must make a brief comment about the authors: Terrific Bunch! - (and may they feel suitably embarrased!!)

Another reason I settled on ocPortal was that the default theme almost exactly matched the theme I was using with my previous software. You can find what I've done with the default theme at Anglo-Indian Portal (the word 'Portal' is a coincidence), and I am continuing to change things in other areas, but at a much slower rate because I have much to do to 'port' the rest of the data from the previous site.

I am sure that there is still a great deal to discover, and I look forward to swapping ideas with the staff and others.

Be Happy!

edit: For some reason the HTML link was giving a 'hacking attempt' error. I am hoping the Comcode URL will work!!

Your site thinks I am a hacker
Can I ask you what your siggy means?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Your site thinks I am a hacker
same here.

Code

ocPortal error
This is an error that has been elevated to critical error status because it occured during the primary error mechanism reporting system itself (possibly due to it occuring within the standard output framework). It may be masking a secondary error that occured before this, but was never output - if so, it is likely strongly related to this one, thus fixing this will fix the other.

Suspected hacking attempt

Details here are intended for the website/system-administrator, not for regular website users. If you are a regular website user, please let the website staff deal with this problem.

Depending on the error, you may need to edit the base configuration (the info.php file).

ocProducts maintains full documentation for all procedures and tools. These may be found on the ocPortal website. If you are unable to easily solve this problem, we may be contacted from our website and can help resolve it for you.

See what I mean about 'misconfigured servers'? I'll  have to contact them again and suggest they look once more at their "mod_security" settings.  Thanks for the input.

Just what it says.  I hardly ever take my own advice, so you may as well have it.

Definitely a bug there… and a very harsh response from ocPortal. I'll fix that soon.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

It is probably a 'cultural difference' thing Ami.  I can't see how you arrived at that conclusion after reading my glowing comments about ocP, but let's agree to let the whole thing drop.  I'm certainly not going to change my sig just because it offends how you decide to interpret it.

It does not offend me nor did I want you to change it just telling you how I saw it.
I know that you like ocPortal and I am glad you do.
I am sorry for saying the truth.  :'(

I will tell you how I came to that conclusion. I have been on many support site for many different scripts and I have seen many people who are upset at the script makers put some thing along those lines in thier siggy.
Infact it was why I sent you a PT back when you did have problems.

Any way I am glad you like ocPortal probably as much as I do.

EDIt: I mean I am really really happy that it does not mean what I saw it as. Really really happy.
Thats why I said some thing.
I do not want you to change it just cuz of what I said and I did not say it for that reason.

I said it cuz I was happy.
