Hi, I am currently assessing different scripts for a community site I am planning to build. Stumbled upon ocPortal by chance and I'm going through the documentation to see if it fits my needs (so far it looks like it has the most robust feature set out there!)

One question I have is the survivability of this script. Joomla and Drupal have very engaged open development and support communities, yet I haven't been able to find much info about ocPortal. Ie., a google search for ocPortal returns <100,000 results, whereas Drupal scores >30,000,000 and Joomla >100,000,000.

Is this something I should worry about?

I'd appreciate your input in this matter.

Best regards,

bunchex

Hi bunchex! I think the primary issue with regards to "hit numbers" is the fact that ocPortal is recently (within the last year) gone open source. Prior to that, it was more or less a commercial entity. Now that OCP has gone open source, I'm sure you will find more and more contributions. As it is now, OCP sports a smaller (but growing!) vibrant community.

One thing is for sure here: you will get support like you've never seen with an open source product. If a community member cannot help you out, one of the developers will be sure to jump in.

Also all new installs of ocportal have no links back to ocportal or any thing on the ocportal driven site saying ocportal unless the site owner puts it there.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

I'm not surprised...

I'm not surprised to see so many hits for Drupal or Joomla though. I've got years of xp with both. They are confusing, poorly laid out and at times simply resistant against any attempts to get them to behave properly. This is a sure-fire method of getting people to post questions - millions of them!

Sheez, the more I peruse the forums… the more I heart OCP!

Seriously people, can I get a group hug?  I've been trying all kinds of CMS out there and I think this may be the ONE!

Valid concerns by the scare avatar dude, but also excellent points by the OCP crowd.

I'm installed and fumbling around peeps…. head first in the tuts… when I'm not posting on the forums  ;)
