Newbie, converting from "other" software!

Hi Folks

thought I'd say hello! I have a site running MKPortal & Phpbb3 which is working just fine, however MKPortal disbanded a few years ago, meaning my sites stood still ever since!

I've tried all the usual alternatives Joomla, wordpress etc etc (LOADS OF THEM!) but never found a good option!
This week I found OCPORTAL & am banking on this being "THE ONE" it even has mkportal converters! (even though I can't get the gallery & download converter to work! (I think this could be my first request for help from you people on the oc forum!)

As with all these things, it takes some figuring out & getting used to, especially when your an amateur who got lucky with a website that gets visitors! like me!

Hey Lee,

If you need some help with conversion you can email a database dump to chris@ocproducts.com, and I'll test it out. Probably some bugs need fixing.
Once I've done that, any help you can give persuading more MKPortal people to convert would be very welcome. ocPortal is a great migration route, but I don't think people know it is available.

I'm not quite ready to install OC on my live site, I need to fully understand it on a working copy I have first. So perhaps when the time is right I can look into sorting out a dump, however I'm getting this error when trying to import a gallery from MKPortal

Code

There is no comments forum configured yet. You need toconfigure thisin the software configuration before you can import.

But can't figure out the configure bit!

I only installed OC late last night so haven't played about to much yet. it will come, I just need a few hours! I'm quite excited by OC, I've hunted high & low for a MKPortal replacement & am really getting the feel that this is it.

thanks Chris

I clicked all the check boxes in the feature menu last night, read the ocP instructions & at this stage I still don't understand it! Like I said I've got some figuring out to do!

I can't import my image galleries, downloads, news articles or reviews. Everything else imported with no problems. But the galleries & downloads are about the most critical part of my entire site!

Isn't there an option there to choose a comment forum?

I'm a bit lost, I don't know how it could happen if it is set correctly.

What does OcCLE say if you type these commands into it? (Admin Zone > Tools > OcCLE)

Code

:echo get_option('comments_forum_name');

Code

:echo $GLOBALS['FORUM_DRIVER']->forum_id_from_name(get_option('comments_forum_name'));

Aha, I think I understand now. I thought that config option was a regular list, but it's not, it's a JS tree list. That means it is able to report a forum that doesn't actually exist. Either create a forum named 'Website comment topics', or select a different one.

Just go into phpBB's admin area and create a forum of that name.

You can use the permissions editor to limit the visibility of the comments forum on a user group level.

'Personal' it certainly is!

For me, OCF was the first Forum that actually had this functionality, and like you I couldn't initially see the advantage/reason/necessity/whatever it would provide for me.

Then after a bit of use I realised that ANY comment, site-wide, NEWS/BLOGS/CEDI/whatever popped up in that forum making my life as an Admin sooooo much easier.

Later, my users also commented (pun not intended) that it made their lives easier when visiting after a short break, not having to trawl through reams of articles just to read comments - or not - but that it was good to have a clue as to which articles or posts were getting mega-attention!

 :thumbs:

Take my advice. I'm not using it!
