I may switch to Arvixe when my current plan ends, although ideally I would like access to a UK based server. I think I read that Arvixe have servers in Europe, any in the UK though?

Hello KingBast,
Thanks for your question, like you I am aware that servers are based in USA and "Europe"
Whilst one can pay in many currencies eg: GBP the physical European server location is the Netherlands.
May I ask why it is important that the server is UK based?
I have sites on USA based servers, European and UK, and personally don't see any real difference in any to be honest.
Regardless, why not try the "Trial" membership?
Arvixe offer a 60 day money back guarantee, and don't forget I can offer a 20% discount if you need it, just PM me for an exclusive code.
Many thanks and good luck.

Hi Jim,

Well my current host is UK based, I am UK based and my main site will be predominantly UK focused. Just a personal preference rather than an essential. I am not sure when my current hosting deal ends but it was for 2 years (only £19.99 and has pretty much everything I need except support for streaming media, which I believe Arvixe offer). I am sure it's been well over a year now, so it will be up for renewal soon. Is the 20% discount on hosting paid in advance only? Or would it be applied on a month to month basis?

Sounds like you had a cracking deal with your current plan.
Media/streaming has become an important part of everyday life and Arvixe can and do offer such support.
Discounts are available on monthly basis should it be required.
Many thanks

Jimd - Good news to hear about your role and plans to develop the Arvixe server platform. I set up a six month professional level hosting a few months ago and OCP deployed seamlessly. When it comes time to renew I will think of you for a coupon.

Couple of things I noted the default install had a few more files than a 'reinstall' to a sub directory. For example rootkit_detection.php which may or may not be important.

Secondly one thing that is not made clear at first install is the importance of selecting the site URL (domain name) because that is the URL that is used to set up the default OCP site (not the access to arvixe server) . IF you were a novice user and simply followed the guide to set up the DNS you would find that your old live site was suddenly not live any more and using the new Arvixe site presumably without content and customisations.

Lastly I just wanted to say what a great bunch of guys they are at Arvixe. I wanted a bit of pre sales info, as well some post sales support and in every case I had responses within the hour. The support could not be faulted and any issues were basic first time user getting up to speed with their system. I really have to say that the support was technically way way superior to what I have had at GoDAddy in relation to DNS and domain issues.

The costs are not cheap as some but competitive with good guaranteed hosting services. As well they actually offer THREE regions. I tested all three in Asia (Hong Kong) USA and EU. I opted for US in the end even though the ping time was better for us in Sydney Australia with HK. We felt that HK being Chinese and subject now to much increased Chinese control we could not guarantee  interference from Chinese Government restrictions in any future period and opted for the US servers as less problematic and the best of the bunch. The way the EU is carrying on about internet restrictions and breaking up Google etc who knows what they may do there.

So we opted for the land of the brave and home of the free (except they play Grid Iron like powder puffs unlike down under) :offtopic:

Look forward to reading your material. I can say that OCP deserves a much bigger profile in the Content Management (CMS) world and Arvixe should give OCP a bigger front image. I highly recommend both Arvixe (although only been there a few months and not yet fully deployed) but more so OCPortal whom we have been using the software since about 2006. Highly reliable, enthusiastic and very competent innovative team.

I can quickly address this one – this file is a part of the rootkit_detection addon, which the Setup Wizard removes by default, as it's rather designed for programmers (ocPortal's installer installs everything, then Setup Wizard whittles it down). So we're probably just talking about your Arvixe install not having been put through the Setup Wizard, which you can still do through the Admin Zone.

Hi One ring rules.
Thanks for your post, it was very informative, and thanks Chris for clearing up the rootkit_detection.php question.

Personally, I have gone for having ocPortal optimised hosting from Arvixe, basically I signed up for an account and choose to have ocPortal pre-installed.

Initially, I am doing a set of VERY BASIC tutorials, to get the complete novice out of the starting blocks.

I am waiting for all to be published before I link to them but the tutorials are very graphical and hold ones hand to get the initial site up and running. From here I will slowly build a site and expand the tutorials detailing each step and eventually getting into the more complex parts of ocP.

I agree that ocPortal is an exceptionally good CMS with so many features and thought that for a novice it could be quite intimidating, hence my initial approach to the tutorials and this maybe the reason that it is not yet the CMS of choice for many?

Be sure to PM me when you need the discount code.
Kind regards
JIM

The reasons for this are complex I think. There are a number of front line CMS systems out there and relatively new players like http://www.woothemes.com and http://www.silverstripe.org/ (Kiwi Company) and Expression Engine https://ellislab.com and http://prestashop.com/ and as well lots of others including Wordpress, Joomla (My mates site was hacked recently and is a nightmare to fix), Drupal and as well NationBuilder. I have looked at them all and always come back to OCPortal.

OCP at first glance when it comes to skinning and design looks daunting. The others all need either expert PhP coders or use developers to get really good sites or you need a lot of time to get it just right. Wordpress is popular because it has a million plug ins BUT its horses for courses. There is always something that doesn't work or is screwed or is not designed correctly in all of them. So you have to find one that does the job you are looking for. That is the trick to get the right CMS for what you are trying to do.

AS OCP rolls out later versions I am sure it is picking up new followers and old geezers who are finally seeing the light and upgrading. ALL i can really say about OCPortal is the bunch of evangelists who have designed and built this beast of a CMS (and I say that in the kindest way possible) have taken extraordinary lengths to look at key things like site hackability, useful options and are building a terrific CMS. Many people don't realise what is under the hood and it is such a shame as OCPortal has all the armoury in the world under the hood to protect your expensive investment in time and effort when you are running and deploying a mission critical site. The internet is a dangerous place and hackers are getting very innovative. You would have to put OCPortal at the top of the list to look just at that aspect.

Well said and I agree 100%. ocPortal is the best CMS. Arvixe is a solid server provider. I guess the only question I have is for Chris...what motivated you to write such a great piece of software?

Ha, necessity :). I wrote games and game tools before ocP (e.g. 3D editors), needed software for the gaming websites.

Hi Pravin,

You are replying to a lot of very old topics. You're unlikely to get any further discussion for topics that are more than say a month old.
