Just discovered OCP and I love the feature set.... let's see if I can actually make use of it

Hey everyone!

I'm working hard on some personal social media projects. I hope to make money !

So far, I've been using Elgg to build my community (still builidng).

I stumbled across OCP and I'm very impressed, at least with the tin… I'm still playing around trying to figure it out.

I would greatly appreciate any pointers or assistance in getting acquainted with OCP.

Peace out!

I recommend checking out the tutorials and browsing the developing section of the forums. Then if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. These are a friendly bunch of people here willing to assist you.

Thank You Edemars, I'm all over the tuts right now… trying to soak it all in  ;)

I'll be hitting the developing section in forums next.

Like most other Type-A's,  I went for the just gimme the goods approach and broke against the wall of - Ok it's installed and running, I picked a bunch of options I'm not entirely sure of and now I don't know what exactly to do to get to were I want.

Wish me luck folks - I'm going to need it.

I've searched the forums for "video" and I got nothing related to using OCP for a video sharing site.

I'm building a niche social network that will depend alot on UGC video.

I'm still working my way through the tuts, so the docs may end up answering my questions.

I just thought it slightly odd that OCP being a "web 2.0" cms didn't have, or at least I couldn't find, any info on a video community.  However, I have found out that OCP has just recently within the last year or so gone Open Source.  Congrats, I think that is fantastic and I applaud your courage and heart for the people.

Back to the tuts…. Is my head spinning or is that the room?

Avatar update OCpeeps.

Got rid of the default random avatar because I'm digging in deep and will surely get dirty.

So, it's time to get personal with honesty and openness about my experience with OCP.

I'm taking notes down as I go and really have a whole slew of things that I will be discussing about my expectations as a site owner, site user, and what I consider to be "standard" in a leading software product of this kind.

For all it's "ups", I'm seeing things I'd like to bring to the fore to contribute toward making the product better not only for myself, but for the community, and for the benefit of OCPortal and its gaining greater market share.

Man, ocPortal…. sheez the galleries…. OMG.

I need to regain composure before a write anymore.

I'm going to sit back and bang away at this some more and collect my thoughts.

I'll get back to you guys on the galleries… ugh

If you do any codeing yourself on the galleries, do show us. Would enjoy seeing what you come up with and perhaps the development team could implement. Your questions on what and what not for galleries are intriguing, so keep them coming!

It looks quite impressive, I especially liked the image-uploading feature. Uploading images to websites was a huge annoyance for me until iPhoto '09 (I use a Mac) had export-to-Facebook and export-to-email features added as standard. Before, I had to choose the photos, export them, upload them using a relatively horrible file-upload interface, tag them (Facebook), et cetera. As a keen photographer, I found it frustrating to upload large amounts of photos at once. It's for reasons and situations like this that ocPortal's 'Bulk-upload assistant' was created.

Whether the Wave-type functionality will eventually overtake email is another question. I know I am using email less and less in favour of Facebook chatting and direct Facebook messages. Is Wave too late?

Perhaps, we will see.

I suspect that it will be devoured by developers and there will be a slew of addons/apps made.

It can be owned and run behind the firewall, that is major! I could have a family wave server for example and ditch proprietary systems like FB etc.. Or internalize wave for my company and customer base. Can't do that with FB.

Federation! Oh Laurdy, now my family wave server can link up to my wifes family wave server! Or my business wave server can link up to my customers/partners wave server to keep all our sales teams in sync, or execs in sync during a merger, etc… can't do that on FB

and the list goes on and on Robbie.

I know of 1 CMS already discussing the possibilities and how to integrate/use it.

Hey there ocPeeps!

As many of you already know, I've been in a slight holding pattern waiting for 4.2. It's finally here and I'm all over it, like many of you.

Now that my install appears to be stable, I'm wondering if I can start working on my theme and making the push toward going live with my ocPortal site. Hooray!!

@ocPortal Admins - Is it safe to begin theme work on the 4.2 rc1 with all current patches installed? Or should I hold off a little longer?

thx.

Go for it :).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I like the new features showing up on here.

However, it's a little out of wack.  So, if you could please increase the width to 980px for the site.

That would be fantastic.
