Themes and changes

With the news of a new version coming out i have a question about theme changes.

Will the theme system be the same ?
Will version 9X themes be compatible ?

I know i am new here and really want to dig into the theme code and get moving but i do not want a theme that will only work for a few months etc. Also i was hoping to seek an opportunity once versed in the theme system to offer my assistance on the site or projects.

Will see on all counts how things develop. I am excited and cannot imagine what else could be added to this already feature RICH package.

v10 is mostly a huge backend cleanup and rebranding and relaunch. It's not much about themes, although there are some pretty heavy changes to how the Admin Zone and main site look. So there are changes, and it's not directly compatible – but the changes are directly relating to appearance changes, not so much heavy changes of how it all actually works and how it's structured. We did our big theme cleanup in v9 already.

I'd advise spending some time learning things, gained knowledge will almost all be valid in v10 also.

As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Well friend i have learnt a lot over the past week and have about a 60% complete theme. I went by the default as i know it had every option/feature included so i would not miss anything. Now it is just down to details and picking at the code. I did not get the full "Flat" look i wanted but it is a huge step forward i think. I now see why there are not a HUGE amount of support requests open here. Everything has been thought of as far as GUI in the front and back end and if you give the cms a good once over you will find there are almost always 2 or 3 ways to do everything and find what you need to fulfill the tasks you may have at hand.

Cannot say this enough, GREAT work friends. Is a excellent well thought out project.
