Moving forward with Composr

ocPortal has been relaunched as Composr CMS, which is now in beta. ocPortal 9 will be superseded by Composr 10.

Head over to compo.sr for our new site, and to our migration roadmap. Existing ocPortal member accounts have been mirrored.

Why is it called ocportal and not occms?

I was talking to people on another site and a portal system is a system that just generates the main page but does not manage the content of the page like a cms.
So I just had to ask why call this a portal system when infact it is a CMS?

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

Some people from forum communities consider a portal as a frontend to a forum system, but that's not really the case. A portal is a website focused around users, where the website is a 'portal' to what those users want; it's basically a website that has more than just articles.

ocPortal isn't really just a portal or a CMS ;). It's both, and more, which is why we made up the more descriptive 'website engine' term. I like to think of ocPortal as 'having portal features, and including a CMS'. We liked the name 'ocPortal' when we came up with it a few years ago, so that's why we went with it :).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Well-settled

Amichan, I was reading forum here tonight cahtcing up and came across this post, so I'm sorry for not having caught it much earlier, and I followed your link to your IPB discussion.  I know that they closed your thread, which is a cryin' shame frankly, but even though I've never used Etomite, a quick look at the CMSmatrix really supports your point.  Check out this site:  CMS Matrix - cmsmatrix.org - The Content Management Comparison Tool

When you get there, click on ocPortal and Etomite and then click compare.  I'd love to know how InvisionCube can/could justify that Etomite is supposedly a full-fledged CMS and ocPortal is not given that overwhelming and lop-sided collection of features in favor of OCP.

I did look at that and It confirms every thing I said.
The makers of etomite are so pariniod of not making a portal that its become useles.

I guess a warning in your line of work tends tomean 'run for cover'. Fortunately it's not so severe when it comes to computers ;).
