Hey,

As many of you have noticed, I'm using Twitter. However, I have a pretty serious problem with it. I'm very busy and don't have time to keep rechecking the Twitter site, so I use 'twidget' on the Mac dashboard to keep up-to-date on it. That works fine except I never see any replies sent to me on there, I can only do that from the site and clicking '@Replies'– so it's very hard for me to give anyone a timely response. I've tried searching around and all I can find about this is discussion about a policy decision Twitter did a while back about how private @Reply's to friends are displayed, which is something else entirely. I can't find any relevant options in my Twitter profile, or in the Twidget options.
Also I'm in the UK, and we don't have SMS support for Twitter here (economic reasons – the mobile phone charging structure is very different in the UK).

Any help would be welcome :).

  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

All my Mac and twitter friends use Seesmic - All of your social services in one place.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

There are several Twitter applications for the iPhone OS that you could check out, assuming you still use your iPod Touch.

Try the one I mentioned it is a nice app. It does not work very well on linux but does work on windows and mac. Works the best on mac from what I have seen.

The thing is, I need something I can check really easily without having to think about it and without it being distracting. Twidget is nice as I have it sitting on my dashboard next to my todo list and active-projects board - it's there in my face, but only when I go to my dashboard so it's not distracting and it's not something I have to think about.

Hey Chris here is an idea, OCP could just hire me as a professional Tweeter.

I will tweet my entire experience from first install forward, give my impressions, discuss support I have received, theming, feature set, etc etc.

You know social media is all about the "people" and not the business.  They will connect with someone "real" like them, more than the company trying to push their product.

just something to think about.

Give me a shout on Personal Topic to discuss, maybe we can do a quid pro quo.  Looking forward to hearing from you.

I like that idea, I have seen others do it and it works well.
My blog actually gets a lot of hits through twitter.
A site for geeks girls got off the ground through twitter and it is doing very well and I am proud to be a part of that community.

So, what I ended up doing was I found another Twitter dashboard widget which can show tweets sent to you- but only if you set it to just show those. So now I have two separate widgets running - general messages from people I'm following, and tweets sent to me. Not ideal, but it seems it's the best that can be done.
I evaluated the other Twitter clients, two of them Adobe Air-based. They certainly had the features I needed but I didn't like that I couldn't close them to the dock like normal Mac apps, I'd have to have left it minimised which would eat up my dock space – so I'm still convinced on the mac the dashboard is the way to go.
