Webhosts?

Hiya all,

I'm looking to migrate to an actual webhost instead of hosting things myself.  So the question I have is…

What webhosts have exactly what I need in order to run ocportal?  Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks for any help,

I just checked them out…they seem to be really good for price!  I'll give them a try!

Nigel, have you ever heard of or tried Lunarpages.com?  Just wondering as I've heard many good things about them.

I just checked them out and dont think I like the fact they only have two plans…    you should be able to find current php, mysql, shell access and some good stuff for less than 22.95…..   they shouldn't jump you all the way up to that from one plan to the other…..

hosting metro gives me ulimited everything   databases, sub-domains, emails, etc.. server is pretty current.  I also like servers that use cpanel… Makes things easy…

I'm using http://www.phpwebhosting.com, they've been great, the only problem I've run into now running ocPortal is that they have URL-File access disabled, so I'm having to rewrite a lot of the functions to use a workaround I've found (wget to a temp file, read temp file)

ocPortal 2.1 won't require url file access :).

Was I helpful?
  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

Well-settled

I recommend Site5.com simply because after my five years building websites, I've found nobody to beat them.

I've had the misfortune of seeing hosts crumbling away into nothingness or treating their customers unfairly after promising support they don't give - Site5 give support within five minutes usually and no longer than half an hour on a weekday.

Oh yeah, and they've been around since 1998 so you won't get that old "run from a teenager's bedroom" feeling you get with some hosts… hands up if you've been in that kind of situation ;)

Did I mention their rates are uber-reasonable? They beat the above post for bandwidth alone hands down so they're good for larger sites like my gaming sites.

The Last Outpost - Entertainment news, reviews, previews & interviews. No holds barred - big boys' language in use!

Hi there TKS,

I'm working on a web-files hosting project for my board members. I can host your site for free if you run a non-commercial site.

I got one running on CentOS and one on Red Hat 9, quite robust as i can say. If interested or if you wanna know more info about my server spec, contact me at tdnguy3n@yahoo.com

Here's one site is on the server: http://www.all4actions.net

As I will be launching our new host within a couple of weeks, I will probably be able to give ocPortal users custom deals at lower than normal prices.

PM me if you're interested.
