I was wondering if it was possible to retrieve my data from my Dolphin CMS to ocPortal?

Similar discussion going on here, but for Drupal…

View topic: Drupal 5 to ocP: Comments - ocPortal.com

Basically, you need to go via neutral interchange formats, like CSV or RSS files. So you need to get it out of Dolphin into these formats, and then back in.

I may advise a bit about getting them into ocPortal (I want to ensure ocPortal supports one good standard format for each kind of content), I can't say much about getting them out of Dolphin.

  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

That is the main issue I have with Dolphin. They built it so that unless you want to hire another for outrageous prices, it's very hard to retrieve data. Even when you transfer data from one Dolphin to another, you lose a lot of data and won't transfer anything but text. Very annoying to say the least. I don't have a lot of members so far, maybe a hundred and some members,so not to worried about this, just would be nice not to have to ask members to resign up to new CMS.:(

What kinds of data do you need to convert?

Ok, I know nothing about how data is stored in Dolphin. If the member stuff is all in a single table, phpMyAdmin can export to CSV, then you can alter that to look more like the CSV ocPortal can import.

ocPortal can import zips of images and videos. It wouldn't associate to members, but it would get them into a gallery. If you can get each member's stuff into a separate zip, you can then import each into a new gallery – or get the members to do it themselves.

Not sure if any of that is realistic, but that's my quick answer.

Yeah that would be easy...but alas Dolphin not that easy and data scattered all over the database files. Thats one of the reasons I am leaving it behind, well that and all the lies and issues that they never get right..lol

LightWolf-

You might want to contact Harry-S. I believe he has some experience with Dolphin. There may no be much joy but you can at least commiserate about Dolphin's lack of needed features.  :)

Yeah 5 years plus of nothing but problems and false promises has chased a lot of us away that were with Dolphin since almost day 1 have left.I have waited to advertise my site all this time hoping they would fix what they sent out, but all I got was errors and hacked the first 4 years. Have not upgraded in long time as I felt it was time to move on. So here I am..lol Once I get the site up and looking the way I need it to look and run, will then try to get data from dolphin, or just link new site so members can resign. I lost another 100 members from past over dolphin issues and host issues. Am tired..lol Just a grandma trying to make a nitch in the cyber world for people like me.

I have some experience using Dolphin, LightWolf. Chris' advice about using phpMyadmin is a good one. It is fairly easy to separate the tables that contain the data you need to transfer to OCP. Once you find the right tables, export them in CSV format.

If I remeber correctly, videos and images are stored in file folders and you can simply download those folders, and then upload them to OCP.

Yeah we seem to be the side of the U.S that is not effected by the heat wave :) . Am very glad for that..lol And psydoc I have not worked with CSV much but will look into that. With only 118 members may just be better to have them resign then get massive headaches trying to do all the transferings..lol From what others tell me, its not as easy as it sounds to do this. But then when is being a Webmaster easy?..lol Trial and error has taught me a lot over the years. Heck I know more then a few of my computer geeks friends at this point..lol

I am in the Chicago area. Cool tomorrow.  :)

phpMyAdmin has a pretty good documentation system; however, you are correct that it is not easy. I did it for a few of my hosting clients, then finally told everyone that I would no longer support dolphin, and a few other scripts.

I hear ya..lol Dolphin is just a money pit that will never really go anywheres..Especially since owners don't like Americans, they say we bad people cause we eat meat..hahaha Everytime you purchase a module and they do a upgrade, you can not use it anymore and it's up to developer to upgrade it for free, but usually they want you to buy it all over again. I bought a few modules and never got to use them because of the upgrades.
