Lets make this better!

Greetings,

So I was tinkering around waiting for my pills to kick in and decided that I'd hop on into the chat room for fun. Only thing was, I did not see fun there. Instead... I saw disappointment and a great loss for our community.

While in there I counted twenty two (22) unanswered, not responded to, individual persons! And that was without clicking on the "display more" link! That is shameful folks! We are the ocPortal community! We can do better!

Therefore, despite my dislike of (as himagain put it) the out-of-place, alien looking zoho chat interface (I happen to like the default ocPortal chat room a lot better....), I have decided to make this pledge. Everyday that I get online and open my browser, I am also going to open up the ocPortal chat room in another tab, and do my best to respond to whoever comes in there.

Who will join me? Who will stand up to meet this yet unfilled need? Who will say, "I too will log into ocPortal chat when I am online?"

Like ocPortal? Want to thank Chris and gang somehow? Then help out in the chat room! It really needs your help! Just open it in a tab everytime you open your web browser, and when you hear a "ding", check it out!

I can only do one helpdesk, my own. :)
But I hope that more members join this initiative of Mythus.

It is a great initiative mythus!
But, I'm not comfortable with chat on any device. I am too old to learn to type quickly and beside, English is not my main language. It requires from me a slow thought process when writing it as opposed to speaking it.  I keep stumbling repeatedly over ridiculous typos. Add the pressure of having to respond immediately and I'm stumped finding the right expressions to write instead of the words I would normally say. When the "chat" room turns into a Skype like conversation tool, you will surely find me there on my visits. Until then, no promises.;)

Like Jean, my typing is atrocious (all those misspellings in my posts are typically the results of my typing rather than my spelling which is quite good). I may give it a shot anyway just in case I might be able to help someone out.

Jean, Harry, come on guys…

Listen, I am no big fan of chatrooms either. I have been a forum user since '99… never feeling comfortable with chat rooms. Plus given the fact that….

1.) I am insanely busy working on trying to breath life into my stubborn site…

2.) With my own limitations I fear making a fool out of myself…

3.) I am so easily distracted or simply "not there" (TBI-induced narcolepsy for the win)…

Yet, I am still stepping out of my comfort zone to help ocPortal in anyway I can.

If you honestly can't check into the chatroom, I understand and won't hold it against you. But think, there maybe some that come in there that do need to speak to someone in french or dutch. Heck, there's an unanswered chat in there for someone asking for dutch translation support.

And don't worry about typo's. I am the king of typos :P

I seem to be experiencing technical difficulties with ocPortal's chat this morning.

It maybe because of my trouble I am having with my internet thismorning, or it *might* be possibly related to me trying out a different browser (midori - which is very lightweight). But since it is a webkit browser, I doubt that.

Fun fact - the chatroom in my site is working fine. It is using the default ocPortal chatroom. So yeah, I still push for that :P

Well hopefully the ocProducts staff is aware of the situation and working hard to remedy it. It is hard to lead a great chatroom initiative with a broken chatroom lol, not to mention, it just plain looks bad for ocPortal.

I'll close my still trying to load chat tab for now and check on it again later.

It's not hosted on our server, so there's not much we can do I'm afraid. Bad timing really.

Seems all of Zoho is bogged down:

Code

Chris-Grahams-iMac:~ chris$ ping wms.zoho.com
PING wms.zoho.com (74.201.154.191): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
^C
--- wms.zoho.com ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
Chris-Grahams-iMac:~ chris$ ping chat.zoho.com
PING chat.zoho.com (74.201.154.149): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
^C
--- chat.zoho.com ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
Chris-Grahams-iMac:~ chris$ ping zoho.com
PING zoho.com (74.201.112.85): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
^C

They may have just firewalled ping, but usually this means that a service is offline or slow. Certainly web requests are hanging.

I can load the main Zoho site, but it's slow.

Yeah, that is not looking too good Chris, especially if you are wanting to be able to provide chatroom service to a growing ocPortal community.

It might be time to rethink zoho.

Frankly, we don't have the resources to have a user-friendly chat room (i.e. web-based, with automatic logins) that is self-hosted.

If the number of chat users gets deep into double-digits (which is possible in the future given we've made an effort to integrate it into core infrastructure), then we'd either need:
  1. a dedicated chat server
  2. or, we'd need to set up and maintain XMPP which basically means having a very good sysadmin spending weeks on it and a few days maintenance each month on an ongoing basis

Either way, it's thousands spent on something where we can't recoup the investment and maintenance costs. The chat room is essentially a service to people not able to invest in official support channels, so it's not something that is going to be fundable.

Plus, if Zoho can go down, certainly if we start adding servers or more complex network services, we can go down to. That means a need for ongoing system administration.

So, if someone wants to come along and donate all it would cost then I'm all for it, but I don't see this happening, and if people are willing to donate I'd much rather see people spend it on feature sponsorship.
