Hi all,

We're doing ongoing design improvements and user experience review for everything and anything in our ecosystem. I need to keep our designer busy doing useful things, so please let me know any suggestions you have.

I'm not looking for ideas for new themes, but rather for general things we can improve.

For example, I think our addon screenshots are a mess, so I think we'll sort out a proper screenshot template for them.

Currently all our tutorials are under review for usability. Maybe we'll get some new diagrams in there. Do you have any ideas?

If you find ugly parts of ocPortal or ocPortal.com, or anything else, it would also help if you could post a screenshot to help us pinpoint where to focus at.

  • If not, please let us know how we can do better (please try and propose any bigger ideas in such a way that they are fundable and scalable).
  • If so, please let others know about ocPortal whenever you see the opportunity.
  • If my reply is too Vulcan or expressed too much in business-strategy terms, and not particularly personal, I apologise. As a company & project maintainer, time is very limited to me, so usually when I write a reply I try and make it generic advice to all readers. I'm also naturally a joined-up thinker, so I always express my thoughts in combined business and technical terms. I recognise not everyone likes that, don't let my Vulcan-thinking stop you enjoying ocPortal on fun personal projects.
  • If my response can inspire a community tutorial, that's a great way of giving back to the project as a user.

I suggested this before in another thread but will post it here as a reminder. In terms of visual improvement or design changes that I (well more so my users) would like to see is the Wiki+ to look (and/or behave) a little more like other traditional wiki's. Navigation is one area and I suppose the editing options may be another. As a user on one of my clan sites pointed out they'd like our wiki to look or behave a little more like this one:
Landmark Wiki

which is very similar to wikipedia again a much better looking wiki type system.

Just suggestions that require little to no programming please, as we have plenty of designer time at the moment but a big back log of programming. Not that we don't want other suggestions too - but those are best in dedicated tracker issues.

While I know some improvement might need programming I thought perhaps some of it could be done via design. I dunno I was just think a little template layout changes might make things appear more traditional wiki like. If so its an idea. If not sorry.

Perhaps you're right. The thing is, it's hard for me to imagine what you mean because the only thing that defines a wiki as a wiki is it having pages with editable blocks of text ;).

If you turn on the wiki mode for a Wiki+ page (I forget the page option OTTOMH) it basically will do that, as it'll hide all the posts.

But, I imagine you mean something more specific - e.g. template layouts, like maybe having a column on by default and some way to specify it's contents. Actually that should be possible too – just using custom Comcode, which is kind of equivalent to Mediawiki templates.

Maybe we need a default Custom Comcode tag for a wikipedia-like page?

Hmm I didn't realize there was a wiki like option? coolio.

Yeah I was sort of thinking under designer changes (without much coding) like you are saying, sort of dedicated wiki blocks for navigation type things and or layouts or styling for media or reference links and things like that. I don't know its mostly my users that say it doesn't feel like a wiki and as such maybe we should just use forums cause it looks and feels more like that anyway. So I figure maybe if a designer played a little with that section it would seem more wiki friendly? To me I have always been more drawn to catalogues and forums the wiki+ hasn't seemed to have a huge advantage to me so I don't play with it enough.

On that note I don't know if design changes can be made to catalogues (thinking mainly shopping ones) easily enough but I would think they could use some styling and also the galleries maybe.

I know you said no theme work but a secondary basic default theme that looks a little more web2.0ish for users to opt from might be cool of course I realize that could present issues if it doesn't play well with the theme wizard after done but its another idea.

Well, v10 already has some major redesigning actually, people are going to be surprised already :). We've done a few dozen screen re-designs a while back. It's best if people post specific screenshots - this looks crowded - this looks misaligned - this lacks symmetry - this is inconsistent - that kind of thing. Then we can go direct some attention to it, if it hasn't had it already.
