Whenever I am looking for a new script, one of the things I look for is a listing of sites currently employing that script.  When I was looking at OcPortal, I was disappointed that I couldn't find any examples of working sites, but since there was a free download, and it seemed to have all the features I wanted, I went ahead and tried it anyway.  But, usually, I don't in such a case, and I expect there are a lot of people like me.

Even now, as a Registered User, when I go through the profiles of other users, I can only find 1 single link to a working site powered by OcPortal - that's Fletch's site, Anglo-Indian Portal.

My suggestion would be to gather up a list of all of the decent, working OcPortal sites, and put it out there on your website, so that potential buyers can see the various ways it can be implemented.  I think this would make it easier for people to see the various features that can be implemented, and visualize their own site with this software.  It's always a big selling point to me, to see others actively using it (implies that it's easy to use, anybody can do it, etc.).

Just a suggestion!  Once my site is actually put together, I'd be fine with you listing mine.  Hopefully others would feel the same!

Valerie

The ocPortal site is running their own software. Why list sites for buyers to see as they can just take a tour through this website? It's almost as if a demo of the software is already provided.

Yes, but that only shows one example, one layout, one skin, etc.  If a person can see others, they can see how flexible it can be, how other people - not just programmers - can use it.

Plus, there's that whole "herd mentality" thing - if they see that others are using it, they may want to jump on the bandwagon!

Just a suggestion. I personally find it helpful to look through other people's sites to get ideas for how to use it.  I think others would, too.

Most programmers don't provide examples of websites who use their software. Now I'm not sure why, but in my point of view, I wouldn't either as it's basically pointless. Buyers don't need to see every aspect of ocPortal, they don't need to see every available skin, etc…

I find it easier just to keep it the way it is now with the ocPortal site being the only viewable source. Buyers only need a *general* idea of how the software operates.

Respectfully, I must disagree.  For instance, if I go to hotscripts.com, on the page where OcPortal appears, here are links to the sites of the other scripts that also appear on that page.  Just about all of them have a list of "clients," "featured sites" or "testimonials."  Basically - they are all showing off how their product can be used.  Here are just some of the examples (I didn't copy them all):

PhpFox
PhpCow
Bitrix Site Manager
Interspire ArticleLive
Handshakes  (look at Handshakes in Action near bottom of front page)

Now I'm not sure why, but in my point of view, I wouldn't either as it's basically pointless. Buyers don't need to see every aspect of ocPortal, they don't need to see every available skin, etc…

I agree that they don't need to see every available skin or implementation, but wouldn't it be nice to at least see a few?  Remembering that, I believe, a fair amount of buyers for a product like this are not techy people, they are business people who want something that will help them quickly, easily and inexpensively get a professional and full-featured website up.  If they only see one example, they are going to think that is the only way it can be set up.  Give them a few other examples and they begin to understand that there are a variety of options available to them.

Buyers only need a *general* idea of how the software operates.

And again, I must respectfully disagree.  The first thing that a salesperson learns is that "no" really means "give me more information."  Since most of the customers here aren't going to call up the staff and ask questions, the website has to do the selling for them.  I'm certain that one of the reasons a free download is available here is so that people can try it out and see how good it is.  Why would they need that if buyers only need a *general* idea?  Would you buy a car, having only a general idea of what it can offer you?  I wouldn't, and the same goes for anything else I buy.

In my opinion, give them the answer to all their questions, so they know this is the best product available to them (and for a VERY reasonable price, I might add).  I think some testimonials, which include links to working sites, would greatly enhance the saleability of this product.  People like to see other people, like themselves, using a product and endorsing it.

PS - btw, I did notice that there is a Case Studies link there, but it only shows screenshots - no working sites.

Maybe the case study should be changed to sites running ocPortal or some thing.
Or even a section on the Forum where members can show off their sites, seen that on many sites and users love it do to free advertising and the script makers like it cuz it shows people like their scripts.

I run http://otakuplayground.com and am hopping to make themes and other things for ocportal even though I no longer use it for otakuplayground.com I still love it and feel it could go far with the right help. It needs themes and needs people to advertise for it.

www.familylawwebguide.com.au is our OC site under development. Its far from finished but a commercial site start. A number of pages and forums exist  that are dependent on user group membership so a guest will not get that big an experience yet.. Particulalry under community>lobby groups. There are actually two member group level permissions required to see the pages under SRL's for example. Amichan has a very interesting concept with some neat gaming character graphics on the gaming site.

Site is developing nicely, OneRingRules.

As far as content is concerned - wish I'd had something similar to refer to when I needed it.

More power to your site building, and I think you should add it to your signature so that peeps can view an example of a 'working' site.

Good luck.

Take my advice. I'm not using it!

You might want to take the full-stop out after ".info", as some browsers might not like it.
